According to projections, in 2014 Hispanics will be the largest ethnic/racial group in California, thus becoming the third US state (after New Mexico and Hawaii) without a white plurality.

Given the current racial make-up of the Democratic/Republican party base, this will likely further entrench Democratic control of the most populous US state.

And as Pew Research points out, It will be interesting to see what will happen in the second largest state of Texas, which already has a sizeable (and increasing) Hispanic minority, as demonstrated above.

Texas has voted Republican in presidential elections since 1980, but due to the heavy Hispanic preference for Democrats, the demographic trends could end up turning Lone Star into a blue state over time...

I suspect Texas will be the next to declare a Latino majority. California and Texas are the top two most populous states. California has roughly ten million more so it's the most populous by a bit more than the proceeding three; Texas, New York and Florida. People love California. apparently. Don't believe this rhetoric about it going bankrupt and everyone is leaving. Complete hogwash. It's got about 39 million people.

Damn, New Mexico has a fair share of Native Americans compared to most of the US.

A majority of Hispanics in the U.S are white ..

26,735,713 are identified as white

out of 50,477,594 Hispanic

source, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographi ... ted_States

The census predicts white people to increase in the U.S. from 72% to 76% by 2050 because of the immigrating Hispanic white people.

It is a bizarre concept these racial statistics to think somehow a white guy from Latin America is different from a white guy from America.

I live in a state with a large Hispanic population and they always distinguish between white and Hispanic on forms and such. They will have Caucasian (non Hispanic) as one choice and Hispanic as another and sometimes they even have categories for Hispanics, too, like Cuban or Central American.

That's not even remotely correct.

A Democrat was governor of New Mexico from the beginning of 2003 until the beginning of 2011.

Thanks, I copied from wiki. *sigh* She has been in political office since 1995, but not the governership since 1995.

Texas will stay red for a while because whites vote for the GOP at an even greater rate than Hispanics do for Democrats do in the state with much higher voter turnout and I don't see that trend changing much similarly to other southern states with large minority populations. Hispanics also aren't some monolithic uniform voting bloc either, Tejanos aren't that same first generation Mexican-Americans and that's just one ethnic group. There many different backgrounds that they all come from, they don't all share the same views. Obviously in the long term the GOP is going to have to make more of a play for minority voters, they will change because they have to change.

Yes they are all panicking about losing Texas. It's just a matter of time.

"Asian Americans are the highest-income, best-educated and fastest-growing racial group in the United States".

I hope we get more Asians into America , and less of the people in the video saying they can break U.S. law.

Probably due to cultural differences, as was once the case in the late 19th and early 20th century when Irish Catholics, Italians, and Eastern Europeans were considered "Ethnic whites" distinct from supposedly "non-ethnic" WASPs.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hispanic

Also, apparently the US census considers Hispanics an ethnic rather than racial category, while many pollsters don't (or qualify with non-Hispanic whites).

Still surprised, as I thought Mestizos (which don't appear to be a US racial category) would form the bulk of the Hispanic population.
