McCain is no conservative.

Various advocacy groups have given Senator McCain scores or grades as to how well his votes align with the positions of each group.[303] The American Conservative Union has awarded McCain a lifetime rating of 83 percent through 2012, while McCain has an average lifetime 12 percent "Liberal Quotient" from Americans for Democratic Action through 2011.[304]

The non-partisan National Journal rates a Senator's votes by what percentage of the Senate voted more liberally than he or she, and what percentage more conservatively, in three policy areas: economic, social, and foreign. For 2005–2006 (as reported in the 2008 Almanac of American Politics), McCain's average ratings were as follows: economic policy: 59 percent conservative and 41 percent liberal; social policy: 54 percent conservative and 38 percent liberal; and foreign policy: 56 percent conservative and 43 percent liberal.[305]

Columnists such as Robert Robb and Matthew Continetti have used a formulation devised by William F. Buckley, Jr. to describe McCain as "conservative" but not "a conservative", meaning that while McCain usually tends towards conservative positions, he is not "anchored by the philosophical tenets of modern American conservatism."[306][307] Following his 2008 presidential election loss, McCain began adopting more orthodox conservative views; National Journal magazine rated McCain along with seven of his colleagues as the "most conservative" Senators for 2010[308] and he achieved his first 100 percent rating from the American Conservative Union for that year.[302]

I thought the best of representatives vote their conscience, not to rubber stamp their party line.

McCain has no conscience, all he cares about is waging worldwide war and expanding the police state. He'll lie to voters and later sell out every conservative principle chasing these evil ends.

But, he got a 100% Conservative rating from the American Conservative Union in 2010.

Remember: these are Conservatives, not Libertarians, who are excoriating Mr. McCain. Conservatives are basically okay with waging worldwide war and expanding the police state.

Wikipedia and some whishy-washy federal standard aside, the man is not a conservative. He is considerably further left than me and I'm overall center right at best. I know and have known several conservatives that I think are nuts and they think I'm a shrieking liberal.


No, what nearly every elected representative (republican and democrat) wants more than anything is another term. They only get that by votes and if that means blindly following the party line (or big money) then that's what they'll do.

Following one's conscience, or following the dictates of one's voting majority, it's still a damn sight better than being a political ideologue more concerned with towing the party line.

And there are conservatives who consider you a "shrieking liberal"!?!?!?!?! I dare say they haven't been reading your WP posts!
