Is there any hope for a minor US city?

The city of Erie, PA is a depressed rust belt. I'd rather my own hometown that I lived in for years was more like it's neighbor Pittsburgh or any other major city. Even the metro is still off short from the 300,000 population minimum.

Also, back in the 60s, planning officials predicted a combined Erie-Crawford county population of 960,000 people.

Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful I have a roof over my head and all the support I can have and stuff, but major cities are so awesome. Is there even any possibility? The local society is very backwards-thinking and given that there is no other option for me except for moving to a major city, how do I cope with my current region being the way it is?

Will people in my region ever listen to my voice or even consider it worth saving?

How haven't they listened to your voice? I live in a small , formerly industrialized town in Michigan, so I know what you mean. Perhaps you will need to move away.
