Chris Christie, governor of New Jersey, has been publicly accused of corruption but so far hasn't gotten into any real trouble. Before that happened, he was thought to be a serious contender to be the next President of the US. The question (barring future developments) is whether these accusations have killed his chances to be President.

If Christie is not in fact found guilty of a serious crime, I suspect he may still have a chance at being elected. I don't think many people who haven't been personally affected by his alleged misdeeds are that concerned. Especially as politicians are, for the most part, considered corrupt. I think the US has changed in this regard. In the years immediately following WWII many, if not most, US politicians were thought to be "statesmen" having the aim of exposing and defeating the few who were corrupt. In contrast to most of the rest of the world. The US has now become more like everyone else.

How this relates to Vladimir Putin is that, if people vote Christie into office as President, it will be because he is seen as a "hard-ass" who doesn't put up with a lot of s**t and it's possible the US is now in the mood for such a leader. I think Putin rose to power under similar conditions in Russia. After several years of Yeltsin the Russians were ready for an ex-KGB agent who isn't afraid of getting his hands dirty. Although Putin has encouraged many reactionary attitudes and has screwed over more than one person who defied him, Russians for the most part seem content for him to stay on. For similar reasons I can imagine Americans being ready to put someone like Christie in charge.

BTW I am not suggesting any comparison of Boris Yeltsin with Barack Obama or any of his predecessors.

I saw a poll recently (maybe two weeks ago, well after Bridgegate) asking who the frontrunner for the Republican candidacy was, and Christie was still winning by a long way, with about 40% of the vote.

I found an aggregated polling site here:
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls ... -3823.html

According to it, Mike Huckabee (8O) is currently barely ahead of Christie in the 2016 GOP presidential nomination polls. However, choosing Huckabee in 2016 as a GOP candidate would be like choosing Rick Santorum in 2012 - An automatic recipe for failure.

Anyway, all GOP presidential candidates have a significant problem. They are likely to face off against Hillary Clinton, and the most recent estimates suggest that they would *all* suffer a humiliating defeat against her in 2016.

However, there is still some time until 2016. Things may change.

Great link, Viper.

I saw my poll on the website of a US newspaper, possibly the Washington Post. I'm guessing they attract the sort of people who would vote for Chris Christie, because he had about 40% of the vote.

Looks from those limited polls that Christie could be the Romney of 2014/15- a constant queue of candidates will be presented to "beat him", but he sees them off.

Just what the U.S. needs! A political thug. The last time that happened was when Andrew Jackson was President. Andy Jackson was a stone killer who shot several people to death in duels. He also send half the Cherokee to their death on the Trail of Tears March out to Oklahoma. That was our version of the Bataan Death March.

A picture of Christie topless would end his history, he only needs a curly tail.

It is like running Mayor Daley, or U.S. Grant.

Clinton will be older than Reagan in 2016.

Edwin Edwards is running for Congress, he would make a great President.

Edwin, his new wife, all his exes, three I think, his children from months old to sixty, would make a perfect first family.

Putting him above the Department of Justice would be great for America.

I would vote for Putin, making him President of Russia and America would solve a lot of world problems.

Hugo Chavez would have been a better comparison, since Christie is more of a populist a**hole than a gangster turned politician.
