...what if, completely hypothetically of course, Putin just got a bit too titillated by Forbes' listing of him as the most powerful recently? He dreamed up this annexation only relatively after that listing, after all.

...and, hm, I wonder, what's exactly gone wrong with an individual executive? (Any kind of individual... ever notice how corruption always flows from CEOs etc? Humanity somehow never figured out that this is inevitable with individual egos.)

Putin responded to a western provocation. He sends the message to the west. Russia want Ukraine to be on good trade terms, or, at least some of Ukraine.

The Ukraine is $1.5 Billion behind on their gas bill, and that at discounted rates. The gas still flows, but the discount was for prompt payment.

Ukraine buys $4 Billion in gas a year, without the discount, $6 Billion. They are broke.

That is a lien on State Assets, where the State owned most industry and farmland.

The Europe play is to privatize, with the West buying the best.

Europe took Russia for Billions with the Cypres Bank taking customer deposits to bail out Greek Bonds.

The West stands for the Freedom to take other people's assets.

If the Ukraine is being looted, Russia will carve off their piece.

Ukraine, the size of Texas, the richest grain land on earth, 46 million people, and they are broke and $150 Billion in debt?

With solid support for the Russian speaking majority, the next election will put Russia back in control of the governent in Ukraine.

The economy of Europe has been based on other people's land, colonial, war, and debt servitude.

They have pushed the boundries of the EU and NATO as far as they could into Eastern Europe, right up to the Russian border.

It is the same thing Germany did in WWII. Russia won that one.
