If the Nobel committee could give the Nobel Prize to U.S. President Barack Obama, for the war in Afghanistan, then why refuse to honor the President of Russia Vladimir Putin for a "peaceful occupation of the Crimea" :D

Whilst Obama's award was stupid, surely any fool can see that they are not the same thing?

Obama didn't start the war in Afghanistan.
Putin did start the invasion of Crimea.

Oh, if you want to talk about ridiculous peace prizes, I think you need to go back to Henry Kissinger.

The peace prize became meaningless when they gave it to Arafat to legitimize him in the world community.

The Nobel Peace Prize, although it is supposed to be the most important, is a joke. Not to say that there are not many deserving peace nobel laureates. But Obama? Arafat? Rabin? The EU? Kissinger? Ugh. And these are just those I know should never receive the NPP. I don't even want to get to know who really are the undeserving people who received these since it began.

Putin did get the chemical weapons out of Syria.

Putin did get Iran and the west to the table to discuss their atomic program.

The Neo Nazi takeover in the Ukraine went from it is all ours, and we are going to sell it to the EU, to respecting the rights of the citizens to manage their regions, and to hold democratic elections to plan their future as best suits the people.

Selling the Russian navel base to NATO is not going to happen, and what will happen will be done by the government democraticlly elected on May 25. Eastern Ukraine, without Crimea, still out votes western Ukraine. Russia peacekeepers on the border ensure it will be a free and fair election.

In Crimea two thirds of the Ukraine servicemen elected to stay and join the Russian army and navy, at triple the pay.

The Ukraine voting to join The Russia Federation, would solve all their debt and government problems.

East and West Germany reunited. Eastern Europe needs a better deal.

Russia has a lot of enlightened self interest in the economic health of Europe.

Peace and Prosperity would be the best result.

Putin deserves it a lot more than Obama ever will just for opposing US imperialism. Say what you want about Russia taking back Crimea but it was peaceful and under at least the guise of the democratic process, Obama got his award while he bombs weddings and schools daily in his global drone war. Putin doesn't need to invade, he'll leave Ukraine to rot and they'll be left with the choice between the IMF bailout from the EU/US with massive unemployment and austerity or cheap gas and billions in subsidies from Russia. They'll be crawling back with in months, this Euromaidan government cannot survive.

Hitler and Stalin were also nominated so I don't see why his nomination is a problem. But Putin has been leading Russia for 15 years. Setting aside his other issues he absolutely crushed the city of Grozny with a brutal tank offensive. I don't think he'll be winning any peace prizes. Obama won his award before continuing a war that he didn't begin. Putin has a record. That's how time works. There is the past, the present and the future.. See wiki for further details.

As for the current situation, well, Putin already was using Crimean naval facilities and now has to float the pensions of the Crimeans. It will reportedly cost him almost 2 billion a year to run the place. So it's not free. In the process he's damaged his currency, poisoned relations with his neighbors (further) and cost Russian billionaires a ton of money. It hasn't hurt the US in the least. Putin has never shied away from sticking his thumb in the eye of the West and now he's getting a thumb back.

The law of unintended consequences operates for everyone.

No, the awarding commitee should cross off Putin from their list of potential nominees.

I'm not sure flooding a small peninsula with troops and forcing the local military to surrender is really peace.

Most of those local military have defected to Russia, they're offering better pay and pensions.

Compared to the incursions our country's have made in recent years, Crimea has gone remarkably peaceful.

Sensationalist america will only focus their attention on Russia's anti-gay policy when thinking about his nomination.

Having said that, I fully realize it's a horrible policy, but my point is I'd bet half the nation had no prior knowledge of anything you listed. :?

It will probably depend on how he behaves in the following months. The conflict in Ukraine is far from over; I'd say it's only just begun.

Neither. Give one to a soldier so he can strangle his enemies with the ribbon.

This usually left wing British newspaper the Independent, not a habitual backer of war drives,

has run this story www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/vladimir-putin-wants-to-regain-finland-for-russia-adviser-says-9224273.html of a former adviser in Putin's government claiming he has Hitlerian expansionist dreams, even including to retake former Tsarist possession Finland which seceded at the revolution.

Just pure nonsense, if Putin is Hitler then who are we? I suppose they could be speaking from experience, nobody has stopped the US from invading or maintaining it's 'sphere of influence'. Anybody that thinks we should go to war with Russia is not worth the time to listen to.
