Well, immigration appears to be a major issue in the US right now.
So here is a short study which Pew Research just released documenting the changes in immigration patterns to the US since 1910.
The images below shows each US State's largest immigrant population by country then and now.
It is quite obvious how the immigration patterns have shifted from 1910 to 2010, as Mexico now has - overwhelmingly - replaced Germany as the dominant origin of immigrants to the US.
However, the percentage of the population who are immigrants is actually marginally lower in 2010 than it was in 1910, as the downward trend in the immigrant share of the population reversed around 1970 and has continued to climb since then.

Pew research showed a net of 1.2 million Hispanic people changed their self-identification from "Hispanic/other" to "Hispanic/white" from the 2000 census to the 2010 census. They may have changed their race identification because they are "rising up" in America.
Commentary about Republicans is that they only get the "white vote". If Mexicans ultimately self-identify as "white" as they "rise up" in society, then this may supply Republicans will plenty of future "white" voters.
