Why?

It doesn't bother me that all of my relations believe in a God, as long as they don't pimp their belief on me. Why would relatives marrying an Atheist make Conservatives upset. I don't get it. What century are we living in?

Because conservatives aren't happy unless they are controlling everything on the earth and as soon as humans make it into space, you can guarantee they will try to impose their will on everything out there as well. Conservatives are control freaks to the max.

Fear. They cannot coexist peacefully with anyone who does not believe and behave exactly as they do.

Their real fear is anything that's chaotic to them which is where their need for complete control manifests.

What a waste of time and resources. This just in: if you marry someone who you largely disagree with, you are going to have a bad time. Also, whats the deal with the data that shows liberals don't like the outdoors as much as conservatives?

If Christianity were really a religion of LOVE, then any disagreement you have which is based on these beliefs would be overcome. If you "largely disagree" with someone you care about because of religious beliefs it is time to dump those beliefs

Liberals, for the most part, inhabit the cities. Conservatives, for the most part. inhabit the rural areas or close by.

I do not understand what you are talking about. Christianity is a theology and therefore exists as an abstract quality. Sadness over a disagreement is a human emotion that can not be equated with a theology. Perhaps you are angry or disheartened( or whatever your current nature may be) that some Christians are not in fact more in accordance with their own theology?

If this true it seems rather strange behavior. It seems counter intuitive that conservative would be more in accordance with nature by living within it, opposed to liberals who have isolated themselves from an environment that is more in keeping with their philosophy. I thought most liberals were green. Why would they live in an area that destroys habitat and causes pollution.

Nope. Rural life exposes them to the terrors of rural people with their 4X4 trucks, big dogs, guns, Christian values, greater independence, etc. They feel much safer in a big city and have created statistics to prove themselves right.
The whole theme of this thread seems to be about conservatives being control freaks. Liberals themselve are control freaks but, of course, they are more justified on the things they want to control.........according to them.

Last weekend I was visiting my brother in D.C, when we decided to go on a hike along the Potomic. I have lived in the country all my life and it came to me as a complete shock how uneducated the crowds from D.C were when it came to nature. There was complete disregard for their noise level so that every animal in the area was either hiding or had abandoned the zone. However, what shocked me most was the garbage that covered the trail. Heck, I even saw a used condom blowing on the ground. I would have to say that it seemed like I had more in common with the wild animals than the suburban crowds. They have forgotten how to use their eyes so they can miss a fox hiding in the shadows. They cannot smell the scent of the different trees or the musk of newly disturbed earth. The crowds walked with such a hurried pace that their trail was marred by kicked stones pulverized branches and churned dirt. I have to say it made me sad to see people so out of step with nature.

Oh, the irony

Quote:
Hostility toward and willingness to discriminate against conservatives is widespread. One in six respondents said that she or he would be somewhat (or more) inclined to discriminate against conservatives in inviting them for symposia or reviewing their work. One in four would discriminate in reviewing their grant applications. More than one in three would discriminate against them when making hiring decisions. Thus, willingness to discriminate is not limited to small decisions. In fact, it is strongest when it comes to the most important decisions, such as grant applications and hiring

This I agree with.

It's kind of common sense. Political and religious differences do matter. I would marry a deeply religious person, or a deeply republican person, but on average, the staticstics say that I'm probably not going to get along with them as well as an atheist/agnostic or liberal. It's just common sense. Political and religious differences can divide people for good reason.

I don't even like floating the river that much anymore, the tourists are loud and obnoxious,it's like a water park instead of a park. You can hear them comming a mile away because they can't figure out how to paddle without slapping the sides of the canoe. They are afraid of the woods so they poop on the beach. They seem to enjoy leaving dirty diapers behind along with the rest of their garbage. They also get hurt a lot, every year someone falls of a bluff here, becuse they usually get near the edge drunk,or they don't check out where they are going to dive off the bluff.Tragic.We have an old scenic narrow bridge and you have to watch out for them on the bridge, two of them were up on the rails of it taking pictures and then plopped down right in front of me,I had to swerve to avoid hitting them.If you get behind them on the highway they don't even think to pull over to the side to let the faster traffic by,get behind a slow one and you can't pass them, the road is to curvy. Then they will hit their brakes all of a sudden becuse they saw a goat in a field.
Liberal here, live in and love the outdoors.
