Complex life is more rare than diamonds & gold!

As human beings we prize what is rare on earth and tend to be greedy with it and want to keep other members of our species from acquiring it unless they have managed to either be born with a lot of money to exchange for it, or figured out how to amass the money, or do something immoral like steal it while at the same time, we look at each other as not having a lot of value and perhaps, just pawns to exploit if we can get away with it.

This is particularly tragic, since, if you look at the universe, diamonds and gold could very well be more plentiful than we realize while complex life forms such as those seen on earth are actually truly, extraordinarily rare. It's so sad, humans are so messed up. They don't even realize they are the universe's diamonds and perhaps Earth is the biggest diamond of all since we don't even know if there's another earth like planet in the universe. Why do we take our environment and our lives for granted? Why can't we see the big picture?

Let me put it this way - it might sound strange but I don't consider myself a human being, hence the reason I don't feel like one. Humans have such a terribly greedy selfish manner in which they think things are eternal and can never end, yet they are wrong in SO many ways.

I 100% believe there is another life form out there as intelligent as we are if not more intelligent. The universe is FAR too big for there not to be another life form or several. Just think, humans have been here for millions of years, in that time before there would have been millions if not billions of other planetary collisions just like earth, they create bacteria after thousands of years, that bacteria evolves into maybe a bug then after another several thousand years that bug turns into a rodent and so on, until they become a large mammal that can swim, run, jump etc, then that mammal evolves into a human like form and thats where the life form for that planet begins. Same goes for earth, my theory is that life began in a bacterial form then evolved over billions of years into what we are now. When the dinosaurs became extinct the life under the sea would have survived and therefor evolved into an amphibious mammal, creating many different species of Earth beings.

So no, I don't believe complex life is more rare than diamonds & gold, because the universe is just far too vast for there not to be another complex life form out there!

I wouldn't even bring intelligence into it since I don't think what we consider human intelligence is necessary for what we would also consider complex life. While it is possible that there is other life out there (need not be intelligent or even multicellular to be amazing and rare) due to the large size of the universe, I have to agree with 000ana000 that life is more rare.

Diamonds? Feh! We found a whole planet of the stuff.

So gold too, but not life. So even if there is life somewhere else out there (and I hardly think it matters if it's intelligent) it is officially rarer than diamonds and gold.

So some say that other planets with the same situation as earth are common and others say they are rare. In any case, we already found a diamond planet so that makes 000ana0000's statement accurate so far. If it is actually true that earth-ish conditions happen frequently around the universe, that would be great! But so far it's the diamond planet that we've found.

This has been known for long time though, it is not exactly news to astrophysicists and elemental chemists.

Amino acids, are complex compounds, gold is a element, diamond are a form of carbon. Real diamonds can be created in the lab, and it is getting cheaper.

Even on earth neither are rare, it is just difficult to extract.

I really don't understand the fascination with them besides the obvious engineering/technological uses. Gold is an excellent conductor. Diamonds can be used to cut hard materials. Synthetic diamonds are harder the 'natural' diamonds.

The absurd value some aesthetic diamonds and gold hold is purely a meme and status item. They hold they value, becuase they are still considered a status symbol.

You are right that De beers started the engagement ring craze.

The use of gold had been a meme in various culture that didn't meet/coincide (new world/old world), so obviously the use of gold was fantastical to them.

But this value has absolutely nothing to do with the rarity of life in the universe.

I suppose there's no point in weighing our own significance in ratiometric terms when we haven't conclusively (to the best of public knowledge at least) identified life anywhere else in space. I share most of your views in this respect but I believe human life should be considered as just one component of terrestrial life - we have this ugly tendency to quantify the intelligent subsets of life on earth as more important or more unique than the remainder of the biosphere when in fact the most intelligent entity is the biosphere itself.

I'm grateful not just for humanity, but for our evolutionary ancestors, past and present life forms, and the conditions and ingredients of our ecosystem that play roles in the evolution of life on our planet. Though I'm agnostic and don't worship any deistic higher powers, I hold great reverence for our biosphere, sun, solar system--and all of the interconnected, purposeful, and beautiful layers of our universe.

Humanity has an important role in caring for our planet, and I share much of the sentiments expressed in the Cosmos series based on Sagan's books, and in the "systems thinking" discussed in many of Fritjof Capra's ecology-themed books.

I agree with Sagan's suggestion that extraterrestrial life in the universe is very likely. However, it may be inconceivably different from our Earth-based perceptions and expectations of life. Assuming that technology of the future permits us exploration of the known universe, I'm skeptical that we can detect and understand much with our limited human senses and brains. We've evolved to process terrestrial information, so we're best equipped to understand our own planet (and perhaps similar Earth-like planets in the future).

Diamonds aren't rare, it's just a conspiracy by the DeBeers company to keep their monopoly. True.
