Is it true we are never happy with the way things are?
For instance, when society is really restrictive and morality strong and rigid, people holler it's too tough and repressive and we are doomed to be psychological cripples or ax murderers or unrelenting harpies due to this inability to express who we really are. We are simply schills bound up in moral structure and it seeps out through rotten holes in the gauze enveloping our delicate souls.
And when society is like it is now, without much being repressed and moral structures resembling gauze, we hear people holler, we are all doomed because no one can function and survive without morality and discipline so we stay on a productive path.
Seems like mankind always wants to blame turmoil in their own psyches and souls on whatever surrounds them instead of looking inward and asking why.

True and potentially when one becomes enlightened and awakened better to human truths one finds a way to master their happiness from within, instead of finding it outside of self.
But that's a practice that comes with experience and rarely one mastered by the herd at large, as is, at least for now...
The coolest thing of all is when one finds out happiness is almost unlimited and under mastery of one who comes to find and utilize relative free will in the practice of higher and higher levels of bliss in life.....
Sometimes people ask me WHY ARE YOU SO HAPPY!..
AND.. OH GOD.. SOMETIMES I JUST WANNA SAY DUH.. don't you know you can master that yourself.. WITH RELATIVE FREE WILL!
BUT nah..I've been in the illusions of cultural prison too.. and yah.. it can be harder to escape than that smallest hole of needle and whale of a camel trying to escape through that tiny hole of potential TRUE HUMAN FREEDOM IN relative free will..

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times."
It comes down to who is standing on the soap box on the corner, or trying to energize the political base.
It comes from having people of all ages living together, and more and more, decades defining world views.
It comes from demographic markets, where the sexual freedom pitched to the 18 to 34 year olds, along with consumers goods to help you fit in and score, where poor and in debt, but over educated in a non economic field, underemployed, are the common features of the owners of the latest iPhone.
When the Founding Fathers drafted the Bill Of Rights, they left out being Trisexual pot heads with no personal responsability. Such people did exist at the time, so did the Pest House and Debtor's Prison. Those who do not learn from history, are doomed.
Dickens called it, "The poor peoples opera." Having nothing but their bodies, dying at 32 of old age, drinking a quart of gin a day, they were hardly worth hanging.
The same times brought some great writers, the foundations of Science, a great wave of education through books, and a rapidly rising standard of living. Art, Building, Industry, huge Formal Gardens, reached highths beyond anything before.
There are at least two points of view at any time. To those who survived and prospered, there were two classes of the poor, The Deserving, and The Undeserving. Being poor was not an evil, and those who were on a path of being moral, clean, getting education through work or study, and working for a living, were considered Deserving.
It did work, as nothing was done to slow the flow of the Undeserving to the Debtors Prison, being cast out and sent to the Pest House, their bodies being gathered from the streets, for disposal with the garbage, or first a visit with the hangman.
The Deserving were kept to work, and while poor, they did live twice as long. They did have enough to raise a family.
Do gooders like the Salvation Army and Public Health ruined the system. The Undeserving lived longer, produced more children, who's mother lived on gin, and caused lots of work for the hangman.
They became the majority, and the world has been in decline since.
Darwin learned Natural Selection in England, and applied it to all creatures. It is how evolution works.
Evolution also leads to extinction, and the usual is, the greatest number of a species happens just before the species become extinct. It is Natures reply to an Undeserving Majority Species.
Breaking a Natural Law causes death. There is no Appeal.
The way is narrow, be they friends, family, join in their life, and you will join them in the lake of fire.
Death may be the end, all we can know is what brings a long and happy life. For thousands of years all teachings say the same.
The secret to happiness and living in joy is within you, seek and you will find. Do not seek for it in the world.
As the thief said to Conan when he saw his first city, "It is called Civilization, it is very old, and wicked."

I am happy with the way some things are and unhappy with the way some things are...I doubt that will change, but I imagine that is the case with most people though some people may be unhappy about more things and happy with more or less things ect. Also perhaps sometimes one just has to be at peace with things, not necessarily happy about it whatever that elusive concept means.

Humans are new to this self-awareness thingy, we're the first species to really do it so far.
Give us a break. We need time to figure this out.
We're doing pretty damn well so far.
Or is that you're not happy with our "progress speed" in this totally unexplored arena? =)
As soon as Humans become happy with everything 'as it is,' we will all die.

We aren't the only animal that have self awareness, and unlikely the first either.
To answer OP, it depend heavily on personality, it is not a one size fits all.
Individually, we're not big on change - with exceptions of course.
But...
Gather people together into a group and you'll see a push for progress, which means change.
The group psyche is a strange animal... very different from the individual.

Yep it's true we gather stuff. We are truly the world's gatherers so it might be that if we aren't fulfilling this gathering need, we do suffer psychological. Thanks for the insight! It seems like something psychology overlooks. They talk about the need to eat, sleep, communicate, reproduce, but they never discuss the need to gather. I think we are onto something here

What you're talking about in the OP is looking at a set of polarities - Amsterdam and Mecca.
I think as our psychological capability for creating means between extremes grows we'll do better. As for right now we seem to be let loose on a frenzy to take everything to its polarity as far as we can, get sick of it, relearn all the reasons why to avoid that polarity. People laugh at well nuanced and center-ground ideas as too easily overpassed by natural human impulses or just too subtle for most people to get - I don't agree, I think the pendulum is just swinging wildly right now and eventually it'll start taking smaller swings. That might develop into some kind of global sanity providing we don't burn our selves up, blow our selves up, or dutch oven ourselves out.
