I don't have to tell most of you because I am absolutely sure you already know all about Easter and the real reason it was celebrated in these civilizations that existed thousands of years ago and if I am mistaken, bring it to my attention in this thread and I will explain it but it would be redundant to go into a lengthy definition if you already know what Easter really means.

The main point of this post is to laugh at all the fundies who belly ache about Easter and call it out for being bad because it's a fertility/reproduction rite/festival and saying sex is the basest of human lusts and many of these folks have got at least six kids and are working on the seventh, plan to have as many kids as the wife's body can before it gives out and goes kaput. They don't seem to realize, if it were not for sex, they wouldn't have enough kids to fill a shoe. So why they are so angry and upset about sex is beyond me. If they hate sex so much, why don't they stop having it so often?

The ones that stereotypically have a lot of kids are Catholics and Catholics are pretty big into Easter or anything that is considered a holy day. Which denominations don't celebrate Easter?

Some of the Primitives. They talk about the day after the Passover festival when Christ was crucified but they don't celebrate Easter and the Easter bunny. These folks tend to marry and have many kids, like some of the Catholics. Modern Catholic families seem to have shrunk.

Two of the most visible ones do not celebrate Easter, the Duggars or WBC, and I am sure there are others who are more low key, especially in the region I live. I knew people growing up who never celebrated Christmas or Easter with presents and Easter baskets. No Christmas trees, either. Halloween was a definite no-no. My church hosted Easter egg hunts so it was mainly up to the individual families whether they chose to buy their kids Easter baskets.

By Easter I mean the baskets, bunnies, eggs, candy, not Good Friday, Passover and Resurrection.

Ana, the reason for the contradictions in Easter can be traced to the early days of the faith. In order to avoid persecution, early Christians had to incorporate pagan themes into their holy days. Pagans were the majority, and they viewed Christianity as a bastardized form of Judaism, and Jews were hated then as much as they are now.

Christmas was chosen to be on December 25 because that was the day that Mithraists celebrated "the birth of the invincible sun god", Mithras. In the third century AD Mithraism was so popular that the Christians wanted to steal some of their thunder, so the Christians recognized the birth of the Son of God. Note that instead of the "sun god" they celebrated the Son of God. Some parts of the Mithras legend were incorporated into Christmas.

As for Easter (originally "Eostre"), that incorporated a lot of stuff from Gallic, Hispanian (Spain), and Celtic pagan rites. Spain wasn't Christian until the 4th century AD. So, you have the bunnies and the colored eggs etc sharing space with the rather gory tale of Christ's crucifixion and resurrection. The two are far enough apart that many Christians over the ages have not been comfortable with the paganism in celebrations of Easter. That is similar to Christmas, although it should be noted that modern Christmas takes a lot of stuff from quasi-Christian folk legends that evolved after Roman times.

Pezar,

It's Evangelicals who make the claim about Easter and Ishtar. I get the info straight from them. Also, keep in mind, there is no need to call it Easter anymore, since no one is being persecuted, at least not in Europe and the US. And it is true, Easter or Ishtar is about fertility rites so why is it these Evangelicals who want to have xx amount of kids per family unit complain so much about fertility and sex since they have all these kids, they must be having a lot of sex. So why so many complexes about it? They obviously like having it so why can they not remove the thorn from their own eye and understand why others like it as much as them?

Everything I typed still stands and is true.

Hey, here's an idea - let's have yet another thread where we bash people who think and believe differently than us, in order to make ourselves feel intellectually superior. We'll talk about how stupid their beliefs are and how much more intelligent we are for not thinking like that and everybody who reads it will see what intellectual giants we are and how we're as utterly bereft of tact and sensitivity as the compassionless robots Aspies are believed to be. Living down to our stereotype - boo-yah!

Let's throw in some hate and intolerance, too, so we can be the bullies this time.

Before you judge me, you should see a bit of the intolerance they have toward Easter. I am just pointing out that their fear of sex is ironic since they have so many kids. I just don't get it at all. I truly don't. How can you have that many kids and not like sex and if you like it, why do you always gotta complain about others having it? That's not making fun or bashing anyone. I feel that is an honest question to ask people who say Easter is just a festival for a fertility goddess and therefore it's ungodly to acknowledge it, and even THAT is disputed in itself.
So, look at both sides of the coin, okay?

It sounds like you kind of have it backwards...pagan themes where incorporated as a way to make christianity more 'friendly' to the pagans, they realized it was more effective than outright banning pagan celebrations, traditions and what not....a conversion technique or attempted conversion technique I guess more of an appeasement. It wasn't until the Roman Catholic church started taking over that the pagan themes where incorporated into christian 'holidays' for lack of a better term not sure that's the original name of such days...not before.

I do find it a bit odd, even if its not about seeing Easter as an ungodly fertility festival....it seems lots of christians of various denominations treat sex like kind of a dirty secret, or something to be ashamed about or act as though sex for pleasure is a terrible blasphemy....yet they have no problem having offspring, then are disturbed when those offspring get curious about sex. Some go as far as putting their kids down for trying to look good/attractive...like its disgusting and immoral and expect them to dress in plain clothes that cover most all skin at all times because to be godly you have to be ashamed of your body and wear clothes to downgrade your appearance.

So not sure what it is about sex....I also don't see how pointing out that the obsession with sex being immoral
is confusing is bullying; considering many christians think having a family is important and the only way to create one happens to be sex. Nor do I see the hate and intolerance that poster is talking about.

I only laugh at the irony present in certain factions of Evangelicals. Irony usually causes me to laugh. It strikes my funny bone when people are ironic and this seems like one of the most major ironies of all because fertility is obviously very important to these people and to complain every year about Easter...

What's even more troubling is it's disputed Easter has a connection with Ishtar at all and even more disputed there's a connection to fertility, reproduction and sex. So, they are grasping at straws. It's almost like, they are just phishing for an excuse to bring up sex.

The real meaning of easter is to dress up in the creepiest possible bunny costumes to terrify and traumatize children.

I saw this bunny on television earlier and he was knocking over Theodore Roosevelt so it's not just kids that should watch out.

And you can't have your kids biting the head off Jesus.

I saw so many 50% off Easter baskets at Wal Mart so even candy doesn't have the power it once had, or is it just a trend.

It seems everyone of these threads about how stupid Christianity is always seems to be rantings I could care less about.

You're not only grasping at straws, your laughing at them too.
