Now that the Catholic flock has a German sheperd, do you think there should be a Papal oom-pah band?

I personally think this new pope is a BIT too conservative... but it's kind of the pope's job to be conservative...

Well, we'll just trade the Polish polka band for a German one (we life-long Wisconsinites can tell the difference!)

Also, one forthcoming change: No more wine at Mass.

:o

Beer!

:D

(I'd love to see what the popemobile can do on the autobahns, too  )

There is no such thing as too conservative when it comes to Popes. In the american government, a small amount of liberalism is nessecary, but in the church it is a mortal sin

Exactly. The position is leader of the church, it's not exactly supposed to be a PR office. Unlike our supreme courts beliefs about the constitution, the catholic church doesn't see the bible as a 'living breathing document' that upgrades to meet the times (and if God doesn't change with the times as well then that only makes sense).

Is it just me, or would it be really funny if the next Pope called himself "Edgar Allan"? It'd make a refreshing change from "Pope Adolf IX" or whatever the new one is called anyway.....

apparently, ol' Benny-Boy has the eyes of a killer, i have heard. trying to remember who said it...

way to go, Genghis XVIth - first little job = homophobia in Spain. it's nice to know what HE's going to be like, isn't it?

oh yeah - it was Paul Merton said it. well, his opinion's good enough for me...

edgar allen would be good. "Aye" would be even better...

oh, and btw - a bit off topic, but funny enough to be included... heard our beloved leader called "Sponge Bob Blair Pants last night". i'm still chuckling...

I believe that he will be a good pope. What I think is very funny is that the media seem to be waiting for some sort of "policy statement" from him, as if he were a president or prime minister.

And no, they did not fit the Popemobile with a gun turret
(one of Cardinal Ratzinger's nicknames was Der Panzerkardinal).

His homilies at John Paul's funeral and his own installation Mass were excellent. He also has good connections with Jewish and Muslim groups; I think he will surprise people.

Maybe they will renovate a Panzer IV into a popemobile. . . .that will be somthing to see.

John Paul should have taken the oscar mayer wienermobile. . .mmm kiebalsa. ..

In all seriousness, I don't think the catholic church is moribund or inert. Conservatism is not necessarily a bad thing for the church, as the areas of largest growth is in africa, south america, are very conservative in outlook. . . .

I think the catholic church is undergoing some of the most radical theological changes in this decade. . .wait and see.

The catholic church is undergoing theological changes as a pragmatic necessity only in order to survive in the theologically inconveniently educated modern world. It can get away with more BS in areas of lesser education (like, for example, South America and Africa), which is why it can still have such a strong tyrannical grip on peoples' lives in such places. Believe you me, I reckon Catholicism would still be happily going round burning witches, jews and heretics if it thought it could get away with it anymore.....

The Church is strong in those areas not wallowing in the Western worship of materialism and greed. So-called modern, progressive society is depressing and shallow. Our serious music is not worth listening to; our "entertainment" glorifies violence and sexual promiscuity; we dress our children like prostitutes (visit the Juniors department of your favorite store); our grandest aspiration is to get the most expensive car available; we create new mountains of trash each day in our pursuit of that which will make us happy for the next five minutes.

Life since the Industrial Revolution, in spite of wonderful technological advances, is not all it was advertised to be. I hope that those societies not consumed by reality TV and beer commercials will keep their souls as they get shoved into modernity.

The future of the Church is in those societies. We in the West are killing ourselves off as fast as we can with low birth rates, toxic chemicals, and heart disease. The West is the new Africa: a place to which other regions will be sending missionaries in the hope that it can be salvaged.

Have a nice day. :D

Ahhhh - the good old "morality is exclusively defined by whatever the church preaches" gambit, eh? :) Frankly, in my definition of "morality" there is nothing whatsoever wrong in people rejoicing in their "God given" sexuality without worrying about what some frustrated old duffer in a dress thinks about it. In my definition of "morality", people are free to be able to make their own choices (as far as crappy, mind-rotting TV shows allow them to anyway ) without being forced to live in abject fear of a monolithical, malignant power block waiting to destroy their lives (and "after-lives") if their choices aren't exactly what "they" want. In my definition of "morality", people can be open minded enough to explore possibilities and better themselves and their lot without the millstone of preposterous dogma to grind them down and make them feel guilty for it. You might idealise a world in which we all live in huts made of filth, wear sack-cloth and ashes and dutifully break our spines ploughing the fields all week waiting eagerly for our Sunday hour of much-needed redemption for our pitiful lives whilst the rich and "Godly" micturate all over us from a great height. Surprisingly enough, I don't....

Western societies have their failings for certain (the very good point you made about the utterly appalling objectification of children being one). The evolved Western model is still light years ahead of the dark age societies that still unfortunately exist around the world crushed under the thumb of whatever "moral self-interest group" holds particular sway over their lives. Yes - the future of the church is in these places because frankly - we don't bloody want them anymore!

....and what's music got to do with anything, anyway? Have you ever actually heard Christian rock? Euuuuwww!! !! ! :P

I was going to say something like that, but more diplomatically... :P Freedom, pluralism and choice - yay! Greed, shallow worship of celebrities, brand names and dodgy politicians - boo!

Needless to say the 'pros' of Western society are a bigger issue to me than the still considerable 'cons'. Pre-industrial Europe sucked for most people, big time. It now is not fantastic, but sucks considerably less.
