Is history about to repeat itself?
It seems like our economic crisis is causing a massive increase in Social Darwinism among the general population. Crimes against the homeless have skyrocketed, and most of the discourse I hear in this country is nothing but apologism for the upper class's theft against the poor and middle class.
It seems like conservatives and libertarians want the poor to starve to death. Many cities have already made feeding the homeless illegal, as if they were rabid animals and several states have severely cut food stamps. All while there are fewer and fewer jobs, and most of the new jobs pay peanuts. No amount of bootstrapping is going to help if there aren't any damn jobs!
I think ultimately we are being set on the course towards another major war, and that there is going to be a massive culling of the poor, people with disabilities, and minorities while people are distracted by the war effort. It's just incredible how much poor whites, immigrants and black people are demonized in America, even by people who are otherwise very reasonable!
Hell they are even throwing debtors into prison again. It's very ugly in this country, and if there is a context like another major war I could easily see things going into full-on classicide and genocide.
I'm Aspie of course and low income and I am truly fearing for my future and life these days. But when I tell people this, they just think I am being overdramatic and delusional. "First world problems" they say. You know what, America is not a first world country anymore, so that snarky saying does not apply.
It just infuriates me. The richest country in the history of the world ever, and people are upset when we give a pittance to the unfortunate, even while the rich keep growing richer and the military and private corporations receive far more tax money? This country is turning EVIL!

To be sure, conservatives and libertarians think we who are not monetarily blessed are lazy, deficient, and need only to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps by getting a job (which has very possibly been shipped off shore, already), or by starting our own business (even though no bank is going to give a poor person the time of day, let alone a loan). The right have bought the Milton Friedman fantasy that businesses have no responsibility but to make money, hook-line-and-sinker. Just like they think they're the lead character, John Galt, in an Ayn Rand novel. Maybe they do wish we would all die; to be sure, they certainly wouldn't care if we did.

I know. It's just pathetic the way so many have kowtowed to these exploiters and thieves like we owe so much to them and you have their massive propaganda machines like Fox News so many bow to and refuse to think critically about all because of carefully selected, highly manipulative lies and platitudes, half truths at best. What it boils down to is simple. Powerful people do not want to part with their power and money gives them a lot of it. They want power over people. They want you to slave for twelve hours a day in a grimy factory with smoke and fumes, getting your hair caught in machinery, losing fingers and toes, while getting paid pennies on the dollar, just like they do in these free trade zones over in Asia where these powerful CEOs exploit the people and pollute the hell out of their land. This is exactly what they want to do to this country and if you give them permission by playing into their game, they will do just that. Just the idea of thousands and thousands of "peons" (it's how they view most people, terribly unequal to them and predestined to be) suffering under the tremendous strain of their demands, virtual slaves to them, fills their hearts with joy and glee and that's not an exaggeration. Just look at some of these fraternities that only take legacies and the horrific, sadistic hazing rituals they engage in on a regular basis and this they do to fellow rich people, their peers. It's true. They have a wickedly sadistic streak that runs through them and it's even worse for the ones they view as inhuman objects only existing for them to exploit. This is the Ruthless Structure.
The homeless population has sky rocketed so it's no surprise crimes against them have as well and some of the ones committing the crimes are other homeless.
It's because:
1. They want their taxes to be much lower.
2. They see the "poor" as a different race than themselves.
3. They see the "poor" as being in this country illegally.
4. The "poor" all have some profound character defect such as laziness or a criminal past and this is why they are poor, as in, they never bothered to pursue their education, therefore they must be lazy and worthless.
5. The "poor" must be morally unsound single mothers and therefore not worthy of any government assistance whatsoever.
6. They don't realize quite a bit of the "poor" are WASPs living in rural America.
All this they gather from watching Fox News daily. If it's on Fox, it must be true! And as far as "liberal media" goes, the reason I am not scrutinizing them is it's already been done ad naseaum so why do I need to? I am not saying they are perfect, just not gonna waste time criticizing them because so many do but I am tired of Fox Sheep believing everything they hear just because it's on Fox so I feel it's my duty to type this as a revelation.
I envision another scenario. They don't want to get rid of the poor, what they want to do is exploit their labor so my guess is they will deregulate industry, gut the environment, exploit the laborer and then take off to another planet after they have made most of this one into one big Tar Creek Superfund Site. It's typical Elitist thinking. They can foul up one place then just go to another and leave everyone to deal with the mess they made. They don't have to.
Every time I listen to the Sean Hannity show, he is trying to scare the common man by saying, if you don't allow deregulation, you won't see jobs in this country. What bs. Typical scare tactic and quite honestly, it's a form of extortion, but people eat it up and start reciting the same tripe that Hannity does, all dictated by these elitists who want to foul up the world and it's people because all they care about is power and they have been raised and trained to be ruthless toward others.
As far as people with disabilities, what the middle class wants is to trim their taxes so it will mean less services and money going to the disabled. This wouldn't be about wiping out the disabled, more about finding ways to cut services and spending. It's mostly the middle class who want this because they want tax breaks and the middle class always picks on what they see as entitlement programs when they want tax cuts and Fox Talking Heads will spout on about entitlement programs everyday for a month to hammer the nail home just feeding the disgruntled middle class and riling them up. I've heard Sean do this. I can't stand listening to Rush so I don't but I am pretty sure he does the same. In fact, I think I heard him mention it once on his radio show when I had it on for, like, two seconds.
The elitists (very top upper class 1 percenters) want a lot of government money put towards defense contracting, research and military, but not the dog faces or the veterans. More like the technological end and spending on private defense contractors because, you see, this is how they make millions and billions of dollars, and they do it off the government, meanwhile criticizing government spending. Hypocritical. So they don't want a huge war that will kill a lot of the inferiors and you can see, casualties in war have gotten lower and lower since Vietnam. They don't want to just waste a bunch of people at once because they realize they can be used for other interests before they are wasted and it would just be a waste.
Throwing debtors in prison is ridiculous considering how much it costs to keep someone in prison for a year. What is the point of that? That just ends up costing the state. You would be better off ordering them to work for the state until the debts are paid than just throwing them in prison where you have to provide food and shelter but hey so many privately funded prisons out there soaking up that government money. Of course they want more prisoners! Just means more government money going into some kind of faceless corporation. Most the time the reason people have debts to begin with is they don't have jobs so just give them some kind of piddly job and let them work off the debt without paying for their room and board. It would end up saving money in the long run.
And it will get worse until people decide to WAKE UP and start thinking.

Well he isn't totally wrong.
Conservative economic ideology states that labor and taxes are the biggest problem the rich and businesses face.
Conservatives and rich for the most part want to reduce wages as low as possible, including abolishing over time pay, holiday pay, the 40 hour work week, heath and unemployment benefits.
They also want to reduce their taxes as much as possible, while making sure the governments balance their budgets and raise taxes on the middle and lower classes.
Conservatives and rich are pushing for a huge expansion of the H1B1 Visa program in the U.S., which would allow them to hire Indians and other foreign nationals to replace American IT labor for fraction of the costs and no benefits.
Despite many of these foreign nationals producing sub par work.
Why pay an American $50.000-$80,000 with full benefits and legal protection when you can import the labor from India for $15,000 -$30,000 with no benefits, no legal protection, and they cannot leave your company for duration of their Visa?
At the end of their Visa (3 years normally), they get sent back to India.
Companies do this on a regular basis to their IT departments in order to cut costs and significantly boost profits to appease shareholders.
The most famous recent case was Southern California Edison, who had their American IT employees train their Indian replacements before firing all the American IT employees in February (I posted this in another thread).
This is done in Marketing, Finance/Accounting, Law firms, manufacturing to some extent and others.
Not to mention that the Major bank executives and their shareholders made huge bonuses after the bailouts were done with public money!
No other industry can you cause a massive economic meltdown and get billions in bonuses!
Not to mention the U.S. recovery is shaky because companies and consumers won't spend enough to put the recovery into full gear.
We are in a recovery were the amount of jobs creation is small and those being created are low wage jobs such as retail, fast food and others...
To make matters worse: China and India are rapidly cooling economically, Japan is in struggling recovery, Brazil is in recession, South Africa is stagnating, Canada is looking like it will be hit with a hard recession, Eurozone is having a weak recovery, UK is stagnating, South Korea is stagnating, etc...
These countries are contributing to the weakness of the U.S. economy.
Anyways the U.S. official unemployment figure stands at ~5%, though this is based on those collecting unemployment benefits including using government job finding services (if you don't use government benefits you aren't counted. This includes people who's benefits have expired, those who recently graduated like myself, those who quit on their own, those who are underemployed, etc...)
The real unemployment in the U.S. ranges from 10%-15%+, depending on which method you use to calculate it.
It's hard for people today to be fully self sufficient.

...In Santa Cruz , here , the main homeless services center/rather limited shelter has not received its standard annual HUD grant , and is announcing a plan to , if not totally shut down , heavily curtail its services , including discontinuing completely a shelter , 2 meals a day , and more .
I have wondered whether anti-homeless forces may have pushed for it behind the scenes , aside from HUD .

It may seem that way, but it is not true except maybe for a very small fraction.
What they want is for people to take responsibility for themselves. They resent having to bail out those who have no justifiable reason for not taking responsibility for themselves.
Get those who should be taking responsibility for their own lives working and the money required to take care of the small percentage that cannot do so would be a drop in the bucket.

Here is the now old original story about it , presumably you can find the later stories on it following from there .
I often put a number up or whatever to mark a story , so I can , hopefully , come back some day
and read the whole thing , when I ever maybe one fine day , again
, any kind of , even the crappiest , Internet device of my own .
The issue with people taking responsibility for themselves is, often the government will step in and try to stop them. The big one of course is by holding vast tracts of land out of use, but also by preventing people from starting businesses from their homes (I was shocked when I found out my cousin needed to fork out $800 for a license to practise *beauty therapy* - he is in Massachussets, however...).
I think the best solution, though, is to establish new holons in rural areas, in places where the land is cheap and the government unobtrusive. Just don't expect them to do anything for you; you will be in a red state, given the two specifications I mentioned. But you can build cheap houses there, and practise subsistence farming using what we now know to get much higher yields with much less effort than they got in the 70s. So you don't *need* the government to help, you just need to work together.

Thing is, though, those vast tracts of land are kept vacant for the recreational use of all Americans. If it was parceled up and sold off to private business, then only a few individuals would benefit, while the rest of us would be barred from using that land for hiking, camping, picnicking, yes, even hunting(!), etc. And yes, people would be hired to work jobs there in those new businesses - but probably at a low wage with no benefits, replacing the federal workers assigned to said tracts of land who make great wages, and get great benefits.

I asked the local director of utilities in the town where my office is located about whether or not we had a building inspector. He said that we did indeed have a building inspector and he was located in a town about 70 miles away (90 miles from home). I then asked how often he came here and his reply was that he didn't know if the building inspector had ever come to this town.
When I was reading this about the way the mentally ill are dragged through the criminal justice system due largely to lack of community supports and came across this sentence, I realized this country is run by evil people:
http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc ... il/395012/
So, a lot of people are perfectly happy to pay the criminal justice system all that it needs to incarcerate people with mental illnesses, but would scoff at paying for adequate mental health care, that might help them become more productive. It's because in the mind of such people, they don't deserve it: They only deserve humiliation and punishment for their failure to become self-sufficient. In my opinion, beliefs held by such people are examples of what is wrong with this country.
For many with severe mental illness, full self-sufficiency is not possible. These people need supports, not being forced to pursue an unrealistic goal. Historically, human societies have not been so individualistic so as to demand that every member be self-sufficient; it's a feature of this country and it hurts a lot of people.
And I agree, this country has got it coming to it. I believe that when World War III comes, we'll be like Nazi Germany or Imperial Japan. We'll be the aggressors and we'll be the ones with our butts handed to us, with our cities in ruins, with the victors imposing their will upon us.

No, it really, really wouldn't be. There is no reason why such land would be sold in vast tracts to a few rich people - there is no reason why such land would be *sold* at all, rather than, ya' know, homesteaded.
