Folks are conjecturing the Charleston shooting might have actually been a hit on a state senator from South Carolina who was also a pastor at the Emmanuel African Methodist Church when Dylann Roof made an appearance during a Bible reading in the basement of the building only to end in a hail of bullets and the death of the senator, along with eight others.

Is there more to this than meets the eye and it's not just a random shooting by an angry gunman but a planned hit on a black senator from South Carolina?

Well, it seems pretty clear that he picked the church because of its prominence in the black community. So, it would not be surprising if he singled out Pinckney because he was a prominent Black community leader in SC.

It's definitely no surprise he tried to kill himself right after since, if caught, he would end up in jail with all the inmates knowing his affiliations. Betcha he will be targeted for violence.

So...the tin hat crowd thinks that the shooter was a patsy for some powerful cabal that was out to eliminate the senator?

I guess conspiracy theories HAD to sprout up about the tragedy like noxious weeds.

There hasn't been anything to suggest that he targeted State Senator Pinckney specifically AFAIK, perhaps Roof knew of him because his prominence with in the community I dunno but his friend said that his original target was the college up the road so who knows. I think I remember hearing he planned this for like 6 months so maybe he did target him, I don't think he was working on anyone's behalf tho.

When you consider how many photos of Roof with the stars and bars and his gun surfaced online and he had his own website, it's not too far of a stretch. He might have networked with others and they saw him with a gun and made suggestions. Stranger things have happened.

In your OP you described it as a 'hit' implying that the shooter was a 'hit man'- a hired killer for some powerful client who wanted the senator eliminated. So that's what I was talking about.

Now you're saying something very different. That the shooter was in fact just the lone nut that he appeared to be (though a lone nut who may have been egged on by his irresponsible fans on his website). Its very possible that he was not a Aurora Colorado type lone nut (ie mass murderer), but was the other kind of lone nut (a David Chapman, or John Hinckley type) who was seeking to kill one famous person (and was not a tool of a conspiracy, but only of his own inner demons). That he set out to kill only the senator, and things got out of hand and the spree killing of eight other people was just unintended icing on the cake. That's possible I suppose.

Nah, it can still be a hit even if it's just people talking on the web and one encourages the other to shoot someone, if they didn't have the idea to begin with.

I heard that he asked for him by name.

What's the difference between an assassination and just deciding to kill someone specific whom you've never met?

I don't fall for the conspiracy theory crap, but I think that Pinkney was a yarget of opportunity simply because he was there, and probably in a leadership position at the prayer sevice.

There's no way he didn't pick this particular church on purpose. He had to have driven past half a dozen other black churches to get there.

Here's an example of what I meant by my OP:

Dylann Roof routinely accesses the internet, obtains handgun gift from father, talks about it online and his acquaintances want him to post pictures so they can see so he does and then one or more sees the pictures and IMs him and says, I know what you can do with that gun... and it resulted in what went on at Emmanuel AM. I wasn't talking about some spy or something getting ahold of him and using him to disrupt America. I had something much more simple in mind but I still consider that a hit because whoever suggested it, if that was the case, wanted the Senator assassinated. It doesn't have to be an official mercenary. It could have been suggested to Dylann Roof by someone else and he went along with it.

yeah, probably not bright enough to come up with the idea on his own.

and like I've said before - if he wore a turban and read a koran, we'd be kicking down doors to find the people who 'radicalized' him.

He could have been radicalized by racists online. You never know. He did say in some note he typed his parents didn't raise him to be a racist.

That church happens to be one of the biggest, and most prominent black churches in Charleston.
