Just being a man and spreading your legs to feel comfortable is a misdemeanor and can land you in jail! Thank the feminism movement for that!

I have seen women doing the same thing, with a purse adding additional expansion next to their ample posteriors.

I think this is just something that people do when they are hot or sweaty and don't want anybody to sit next to them.

Reminding myself not to ride the NYC subway.

A woman doing the same thing wil get ignored but a man doing this will get arrested and thrown in jail! Manspreading is a serious offence mister!

About time. It will hopefully prevent this type of perverted behaviour:

According to the RT report, murder is up %13, violent crime up %22. Instead of the NYPD focusing on this, focus instead on something that ultimately bothers nobody to show that they are doing their jobs. --Sadly all this does is increase aggravation for people who are most likely already aggravated by the fact that they are stuck riding the subways back and forth to their sh***y jobs.

Crown vics, MTA, limos, gypsy cabs, bikes, feet, JFK & LaGuardia are equally terrible in NYC. The big apple calls for Skateboards.

ABC: First people arrested for 'manspreading' on New York subway

Quote:
"Police officers had arrested two Latino men on the charge of 'manspreading' on the subway, presumably because they were taking up more than one seat and therefore inconveniencing other riders," according to the report.

The term "manspreading" was coined by internet users to describe men taking up more than one public transport seat, by sitting with their knees wide open.

I find it annoying when either gender takes up too much space on the bus. Too be honest though, I'd take the manspreading before the whiny screaming kids.

I saw a video of a US general conspicupously man spreading as part of his diplomacy in China. I think in that case it was a show of US masculinity. The Chinese leaders had their knees close together as is their custom.

I also spread if i can, it's just more comfortable.

However, "if i can" is the operative, if someone wants the seat next to me, i'll close up, and there is no problem on either side.
These arrests are just taking things too far, as long as you bother noone, you should be allowed to do whatever you damn well please.
I'm lucky i live in a place where "land of the free" isn't synonimous with "police state"

Exactly, it's just common sense and respectful of others. If the bus is not crowded I will put my bag on the seat beside me, but I would move it if the seat is needed.

Women are much more egregious violators of taking up space on public transportation with purses and bags and such than some guy spreading his legs. I've never not been able to find a seat because some guy spread his legs too wide, I have however had to stand a bunch of times as some woman has her bag/purse/whatever in the window seat while she guards it on the aisle.

People just need to be courteous, I make space when I know there isn't a ton left but some people just don't care about anyone but themselves.

Me spreading shouldn't be an issues, there are some wide loads out there that spread out on their own wider than me doing a full splits almost. Should fat people be banned from public transportation?

I ride the NYC subway every day. Three people could easily sit on either side of a metal pole, on plastic, bench-like seat. Frequently, though, only two could seemingly sit on either side--because of "manspreading!"

In practice, hardly anybody is charged with a misdemeanor for "manspreading." Hardly anybody is even issued a ticket for it.

I don't like the guys who spread their legs on their seat, preventing other people from sitting. But I wouldn't make it a crime--unless the person becomes a smartass and tries to incite a riot because somebody wants to sit down despite their "manspreading."

Like others have said, common courtesy must and should be practiced on public transportation.

What about lying down on top of the seats with your legs fully stretched, preventing maybe five or six people from sitting down?

It’s all a matter of degree of because-I-can-ness.

The real problem is population density.

Get the heck out of that city.
