For the people who were really curious about it, especially the Mediterranean variants, this book is probably a great place to start at getting your head around what the philosophies were about:

I'm about half way through, have been reading maybe a chapter any free night I've had (usually prefer to take an hour to an hour and a half per as there's a lot to absorb). It's not necessarily all new to me, but what is has been considerably profound. I'm particularly impressed on what he's said on the Orphic tradition so far and it's relationship to both Pythagorean philosophy and the rights of Dionysus.
