Quote:
Trump warns against ‘false song of globalism’

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump warned against “the false song of globalism” in a major foreign policy address on Wednesday in an escalation of his rhetoric rejecting the current framework of international coalitions.

“We will no longer surrender this country or its people to the false song of globalism,”
Trump promised during a speech in Washington.

"I am skeptical of international unions that tie us up and bring America down,” he claimed. “And under my administration, we will never enter America into any agreement that reduces our ability to control our own affairs.

“The nation-state remains the true foundation of happiness and harmony.”

Trump’s comments are among the most vivid depiction yet of his profound doubt in the framework of global institutions that have dominated the globe since the end of World War II.

Critics deride his rejection of that system as isolationist and warn that it would undermine the U.S.’s ability to shape events around the world.

But Trump has maintained that the current framework has left the U.S. lagging and has forced America to rush to other countries' aid.

In his Wednesday address, which was widely interpreted as a moment for Trump to pivot from the primary campaign and attract support around the Republican Party, the GOP front-runner specifically mentioned NATO, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the U.S.’s alliances in the Asia-Pacific as worthy of reevaluation.

NAFTA, Trump said, “has been a total disaster for the United States and has emptied our states of our manufacturing and our jobs.”

If elected president, Trump promised to convene allies from NATO and Asia for summits that discuss “a rebalancing of financial commitments” and also “adopt new strategies for tackling our common challenges,” such as terrorism and migration.

In general, Trump contended, the current international architecture forces the U.S. to overextend itself financially and militarily around the world, without adequate compensation from global partners.
In the end, he said, Americans have little to show for it.

Our allies are not paying their fair share,” he said. “They look at the United States as weak and forgiving and feel no obligation to honor their agreements with us.

“A Trump administration will lead a free world that is properly armed and funded and funded beautifully,” he added.

It was a good speech, one meant not to scare the stupid warmongers out there and to frame the debate as one that puts America first as oppose to running away and hiding. Trump indisputably has the best foreign policy of the viable candidates running, Hillary IS a NEOCON!! !! Trump is the peace candidate.

I don't care what Trump says. We are a member of the international community. And it's necessary to be part of the international community

There was an organization. called "America First" during World War II. Some people in the organization were Nazi sympathizers. Charles Lindbergh was a prominent member; some people believe he had Nazi sympathies.

America is a land which immigrants made great. Trump wants to turn America into what the immigrants in the old days ran away from....a place like "The Old Country."

The keyword is community and there isn't one, we subsidize half the world's defense budget and it has to stop because we simply can't afford it. If the freeloader countries want to step up to the plate and pay then go for it, if they want to step and deal with their problems themselves then more power to them and we can save the money. Trump is 100% right when he says NATO is an antiquated institution where the majority of the members do not come close to pulling their own weight, that's not a military but rather they military protectorate of the United States. Japan, South Korea, and Germany are among the richest countries in the world and we foot their bill for defense? How is that fair? Why do our young people have to be killed and maimed? Why do we have sacrifice our children's futures with trillions of dollars in new debt?

Hillary Clinton will continue and intensify brinkmanship with, she will never be able to wash the blood from her hands for her support of these wars in Iraq, Libya, and Syria. Not to mention they overthrew Honsi Mubarak and in his Muslim Brotherhood filled the void. All the top Neoconservatives have declared they will support Hillary Clinton if they cannot steal the nomination away from Trump, the big money of Wall Street, and the MIC are all behind Hillary. Hillary made something like $25 million dollars for "speeches" after leaving as Secretary of State, must of been a hell of a speech. The Clinton Foundation is corrupt to its core, look up all the donations they got(many are anonymous and from out of the country) and this was while Hillary was Secretary of State. Quid pro quo, she's a criminal and belongs in prison.

Trump is going to turn this DYING country back into America, we are being hollowed out into a third world shell where we are all dependent and enslaved by the government powerless to fight the multinational allpowerful corporations that wish to control this planet. We are being screwed, this is intentional! Trump will secure our border and ENFORCE the law, he will renegotiate these treacherous trade deals that Ross Perot was completely right about that 'giant sucking sound' and will bring backs JOBS! We should not have to compete with third world slave labor, our living standards should not be compromised in trade. Our trade policy should be to make the United States a richer country, not Japan not Mexico not China. Trade deals should benefit the US or they shouldn't be made, we've seen the largest transfer of wealth in history going out of this country.

Trump will make America countries are envious of again, he's going to RETURN the foreign policy that our FOUNDERS intended. We're not going to be sticking where it shouldn't, we're not going to waging 'wars for democracy', we're not going to heed to will of the foreign special interests and the Military Industrial Complex. Do you support war Kraftie? Then vote for Hillary. Do you support outsourcing and the destruction of the American manufacturing base? Then vote for Hillary. Do you support unfettered illegal immigration with open borders? Then vote for Hillary. Do you support the big money interests even those foreign to this country having the ear president before ever considering the interests of the American people? Then vote for Hillary.

Trump will make this a better world, he will smash the globalist racket and United States will be the catalyst. Europe has these same types of bubbling up and a real REVOLUTION is about to. Boris Johnson, Marine Le Pen, Geert Wilders, Nigel Farage, Viktor Orban, and many in Europe are speaking up and don't like the polls are starting to look pretty good.

So … trade war as a cornerstone of foreign policy. Right now I'm sitting in a bar enjoying a Newcastle Brown Ale. Making that more expensive, or not available at all, is supposed to appeal to me how exactly?

I wrote a research paper on the original America First Committee. They were not pro-Nazi, nor opposed to trade, but merely wanted to avoid being dragged into pointless foreign wars. (Following the Pearl Harbor attack, the Committee came out 100% in support of the war effort, then disbanded.) Trump does them a disservice by using the name in connection with anything he proposes.

But what does it matter? Trump has no actual beliefs or principles. If you like something he says today, he said the opposite yesterday, if not earlier in the same speech … Any stand he seems to take is merely a preamble to negotiating a "deal." People who see him as a man of principle are deluding themselves.

If that's considered a trade war then we've been in one for decades and it is time for us to fight back. Japan protects it's industry, Korea defends it's industry, China defends it's industry, almost every country on the planet except the United States protects its industry and as the richest most powerful nation we have the leeway to do what we want on this matter. It's not isolationism or even necessary protectionism, it's about fairness and I do not believe trade can be fair between two countries with completely different living standards because US workers shouldn't have to compete with these slave pen countries, you quote Ayn Rand in your signature so what is wrong was not playing ball with these countries? I believe it is our right and duty as a sovereign and free country to protect the interests of American worker, that is our self-interest. Why should the US sacrifice so other countries can become wildly rich? We should practice a policy of reciprocation, if it is in our interest and they are willing to play fairly then by all means we should 'free trade' but if it is going to cause is a massive outflux of jobs and massive influx of unskilled essentially scab worker immigrants then count me out. Globalism is a disease that needs to wiped out once and for all.

As a non-American, I'm kind of wondering when America has ever NOT put itself first? lol

I don't know, maybe back when the British royal family was looking at some potential permanent real estate in Canada. That was a time that America put it's allies before itself right? There are countless examples and do not confuse the interests of big money with those of the American people.

Well there was this guy in Germany circa 1940 that really liked the look of the British Isles and thought they'd make a nice addition to his collection

Oh right! American World History 101, where America is the savior of the universe. And they did it all for us! How silly of me to forget such things. You can go back to your Trump-worshiping now. Don't let me interrupt. :)

Well we were the savior of the United Kingdom whether you are willing to admit it or not, what do you think would of happened if the United States just focused all its attention and money on it's own war against the Japanese who attacked the us at Pearl Harbor? Now don't even get me started on WWI! The US needs a foreign policy that our founders intended, Thomas Jefferson described it as 'peace, commerce, and honest friendship with and entangling alliances with NONE'. Trump worshiping? Produce a coherent thought that isn't a 1 or 2 sentence quip before attacking mine, thanks.

Frankly, I feel it would be potentially dangerous for the United States to disengage itself from international alliances.

We just can't be a lone wolf in this world; that's the reality

Isolationism never works.

It's not isolationism to not fund the western world's entire military budget and to involve ourselves in multiple conflicts and multiple continents. If these alliances do not benefit the United States and only benefits the other country then they either need to pay up or get bent, simple as that. We shouldn't be the world's sugerdaddy any more than we should be it's policeman. It's not isolationism to want diplomacy with Russia, it is not isolationism to not want to fund Islamist militants to fight so called dictators that pose no threat to the United States. We do not act in our own self-interest, it is something entirely different and the money has corrupted Washington to it's core. These are rich countries that are all almost welfare states whereas America is left to rot.

If you say so. It seemed to me that the Allies didn't start winning the war until Hitler over-extended and tried to invade Russia (even after the US joined the war), so American World History 101: The Universal Saviour edition (where they selflessly saved the planet from Hitler Domination)it is. It's irrelevant anyway. My 2-sentence quip was a response to your 1-sentence quip, so... "Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with and entangling alliances with NONE" sounds great, but the idea that Trump will bring about peace and/or friendship with anyone makes me want to laugh and cry simultaneously. Peace and friendliness are usually the two things that are missing from Trump events, and I don't see how his potential presidency could be any different, so when I see people touting peace-and-honest friendship-inducing foreign policy as the thing they see Trump bringing to the US if he were to win an election, I can't help but notice how delusional it sounds. That's just my two cents, but it's not my country, so support whomever you want.

Foreigners have a skewed view of the United States, that is why Obama is such a popular president abroad but we know the truth.

The Soviet contribution to war effort against the Nazis was significant maybe more than anybody but the UK owes its survival to the United States with its material and eventually military aid, Western Europe in general owes its survival to the United States. Maybe the Soviets would beat the Nazis all the way out of Europe, would you have wanted to Stalin's Europe? Arguing something rather pointless at this point, US foreign policy does not represent the interests of the American people whatsoever and that's what I was saying.

Trump's foreign policy is the only one approaching sensible, the 'mainstream' of both of the Republican and Democratic parties are that of perpetual war and brinkmanship. Did you support the war in Iraq? Did you support the intervention in Libya? Did you support the US arming jihadist militants in Libya and Syria which have become hotbeds of ISIS? I think it is you and every Hillary or Cruz supporter are the delusional ones if you think their neoconservative beliefs will result in anything different than what we've seen the last 15 years. Never in her life has Hillary been right on foreign policy, she is completely incompetent and does not represent the interests of the American people but rather all her wealthy contributors from abroad. She and her husband are among the great criminals in US history. Hillary's reset with Russia was a reset to brinkmanship and to get made a fool of over and over again by the much more intelligent Vladimir Putin.

Trump is the peace candidate, believe it. It's not Hillary, it's not Cruz.
