[personal attack]Just wondering what if this had happened in the Philippines or here in America to a nice white family or a Filipino - White mixed family ? Would the responses have been more compassionate [personal attack]? Gee, I wonder.
You must be new to the US dont get the political subtext.
America is polarized over gun control.
America keeps getting periodic mass murders via guns ( Aurora, Sandy Hook, San Bernadino, Columbine, like that).
And sometimes its not just any guns- but automatic rifles.
So every time that happens the debate over gun control erupts.
But while the U.S. gets "spree shooters" other countries (China in particular for some reason) get "spree stabbers". Individuals like in this story from India who go nuts and manage to kill a whole slew of people sans guns by just stabbing them.
So whenever a mass murder gets onto the front page using a knife instead of a gun all of the anti-gun control folks in the U.S. crow about it, make jokes about "getting background checks to buy steak knives", and like that.
Maybe its still in bad taste. But thats where all of the joking is coming from.
Hope that explains it.
I am certainly neither "new" to America nor unable to get the sub-text. However, I still don't see how it is appropriate to bring that up whilst commenting about a lunatic murdering 14 people in cold blood, including young innocent children in their sleep.
You want to debate gun control - fair enough, but this is not the appropriate thread for that. Yes, this is a very good example to show that gun control will not stop a lunatic from carrying out his or her murderous agenda but I have a problem with people "joking" about this incident, minimizing the loss of innocent lives in such a casual way.
And I stick to it. Had this happened in the Philippines or to a nice white family in Michigan, I strongly doubt that that particular individual would have joked about it in this thread. It is a pattern characterizing many of his postings that I am referring to - usually completely cold hearted, unless the thread happens to involve his own people, or belief-systems and values that he appears to identify with.
For me, a life is a life is a life - whether that's a white life or a black life or a Filipina life or a brown life or a pink life or an orange life or a purple life. I just think this "joking", and making this all about gun control in America, is horrific and that's my opinion on the topic.
If you doubt me, then I invite that individual to use
this incident to make the case for or against gun control :
10 KILLED, 14 WOUNDED in a knife-attack in the PhilippinesIt's even more horrific in that a total of 10 people were killed, and 14 others seriously injured, by a man welding a knife (and not all the victims were asleep either, at the time of the attacks).
