Driverless Traffic!

What are your thoughts about driverless cars? Some companies tell us that they will soon be our primary means of transportation. Would you use them? Or, would you prefer to seek some other means of transportation?

It can't happen soon enough. I'm too impatient with other drivers, I lean towards 5 over on the road and everyone else is doing 5 under it seems. I feel every second of my time wasted when people slow me down. If someone does 5 under in the middle lane, I lane change 5 feet in front of them as I pass them, I am not a pleasant driver.

The bottom line is that operating my vehicle is non-valued time. If the car drove for me, I could call people or clean my car instead.

I have mixed feelings.

On one hand yeah - lives saved, the fuel efficiency would probably also mean millions of barrels of oil saved per year. Also there's some possibility that the long lag after a red light turns green would increasingly become a thing of the past.

The annoying things - obviously taxi and truck drivers will have their careers at risk. I know that truck drivers in dealing with customers, demmurage issues, etc. will have some margin of safety, the taxis are a good question though - will credit card swipe prepays be the way that goes or will they still need people from the taxi company there to make sure that their vehicles are being used safely and not damaged.

One of the things I'd worry about too for instance; if you drive through a bad neighborhood and anyone gets the idea to mug you or even mug and kill you, would they be able to play the car's reactions to collision and danger to push you down a back street or behind a house? On that note I can only imagine as well how the cartels down in Mexico could use these to their advantage. If my life were in danger for reasons for other reasons than traffic concerns I feel like my ability to take control of the car would be mandatory and I'd really hope that the steering wheel in the car would be fully functional rather than being something like you'd have on bumper-cars at the local amusement park.

I can't wait for driverless cars to be a thing. The idea of actually driving a car makes me anxious, but at the same time I'm sick of being stuck at home all the time and not easily being able to go places.

I think they should name the first approved vehicle the Pinto...in honor of the Ford executives that
killed families by withholding their "little secret" that the Pinto (whether filled with family/children or not)
would easily explode into a gasoline fueled fireball if struck from the rear.

This was because the cost of fixing the problem was higher than what the expected law suits concerning
children's burned bodies would cost them. So Ford chose the cheapest alternative....for them. This is
the corporate model we are supposed to trust with our lives?

Who knows of an electronic device that can not fail? Where is the statement by auto developers that
tells us we can not "fall out of the sky" when our auto fails as jet airliners sometimes do? Are we to
believe our vehicles will be safer than multi-million dollar airliners????? I hope no one believes this.

When I think of schemes like this I also wonder what happened to the "personal family helicopter" and
then try to imagine a cloud of mothers and fathers circling over a grade school to pick up their kids....
and then I shudder and cast the vision from my mind.

People and technology won't be ready for a fully auto-driving car for a long time (enhanced could be OK
though).

I wouldn't get in a driverless car until the technology is absolutely perfected. I liked to drive, anyway.
