I just wonder where there are so much Animals
For exemple why American Democrats use "Donkey" as they emblem, BTW in Poland we had saying "stupid/stubborn as donkey, does Donkey in case of English had the same etymology :D
Or Why Republican use Elephant???

As for country Poland use Polish White-tailed Eagle as our state emblem, we use it's since Medieval time it's linked to old legend, America also use White Eagle, the The American Bald Eagle to be precisely, BTW our Polish Eagle is bigger than your Yankees
( (Just kidding :D ) I hope that does not offend any American, otherwise I very respected American nation  )

But why the Russians have its emblem teddy bear, they could not be able to go to sleep without their teddy bears :D (of course I do not intend to offend the Russians here, nor my Russian friends)

the donkey=democrat started in 1828 with president Andrew Jackson's opponents labeling him a "stubborn jackass" - and it stuck with them right off the bat. later on, political cartoonist Thomas Nast reinforced the association by drawing political cartoons featuring democratic donkeys and GOP elephants.

I suppose animals and birds and such are just handy metaphors for human behaviors.

Put them in a debate or a political ad and they turn into s**t throwing monkeys.

By the title, at first I thought this might have been about Animal Farm :P

Or possibly non-human politicians.

For a brief period both the elephant, and the donkey, were challenged by Teddy Roosevelt's "Bull Moose Party".

^Indeed.

Wish I could access the book "A Political Bestiary" by Eugene McCarthy, and James J. Kilpatrick (illustrated by the cartoonist McNeil I believe) in 1979.

The book takes cliche' political terms and visualizes them in the form of mythical animals. Like "a mounting crises" is shown as a pair of walrus-like creatures humping (to pick an easy to explain example). Quite funny.

Long out of print you can still find it on E-bay type book sites.

Trouble is that I cant access any of the cartoons from the web.
