The dog's a man's best friend? Unless we regularly kill our best friends, apparently. I happened to come across this woman's account on http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07jqr11 - where somehow, just because of irresponsible humans, and dogs merely following their instincts, are f*****g mandated by law to be killed?! Even in countries where the death penalty exists (and it damn doesn't this epitome of hypocrisy in the UK... animal lovers, right) - it takes ages before a person's sentence is enacted, yet somehow after a single animal simply follows their instinct and physical possibility is there for them to explore... the family is actually told to PAY a vet to do it? What's this, some cancerous outgrowth of capitalism where an industry and something once called 'justice' is somehow involved in pure profit in a DEATH INDUSTRY.

It's not possible to discuss this with total objectivity, because the utter vile hypocrisy is interminable... the UK doesn't even sentence to death serial killers, and here we're talking about a single dog jumping instinctively on a sheep. Instinct, not a society that actually creates its own serial killers and then simply accommodates them in prison. Not that the state should be involves in anyone's death, but what is this incredibly hateful logic in humans?

Cats kill all sorts of animals due to their instincts, but it'd be preposterous to do the same to them (at least that seems to be the average person's mentality, not that cats are as easy to get to as dogs)... so, we 'put down' (I wish I could 'put down' down political dictators in the UK currently, but hm, they also do far more damage than dogs could ever...)

Whether one is a dog or cat lover is also absolutely irrelevant, I assume. I don't think anyone has any sort of licence to kill any creature. People don't fight it enough, though... if what happened to that woman's family happened to me (though I'm more likely to have the 'protected' cat species) not only would I not pay for my own dog's death, WTF... I swear, it would probably be the only rational reason to go all out. Because best friends, well, actual best friends, usually wouldn't mind dying together... against vile oppression.

I didn't see an article, just a broadcast to listen to which wouldn't play for me. From what I gather a dog attacked a sheep. Why are they putting the dog down? Did the sheep have some kind of disease or whats the purpose for that? It didnt attack a human or anything right? What happened?

A farmer had to shoot someone's dog because it was attacking his sheep.

I have to side with the farmer on this one; those sheep are a man's livelihood. I know dog owners see their dog as a beloved companion and member of the family, but if you can't keep a dog from harming someone's livestock then you probably shouldn't own one.

I get that. If somebody's dog were attacking one of my animals I'd shoot it if my dogs didn't handle the situation first. And while mine don't bite and aren't aggressive toward humans, they do look scary and if somebody shot one of mine I would be completely furious, especially if he wasn't attacking or hurting anyone or any animal, but I would understand why. I have two high content wolf Siberian husky hybrids and one purebred Siberian husky. They look like wolves. They don't hurt people and will run from people if you yell at them, but they will go after other animals.

OP, would you not shoot a dog that was attacking one of your animals, if he was hurting it? You can't break it up any other way, many times and the alternative is to sit there and watch them kill your sheep.

Why did he say the family had to pay to have the dog put down if the farmer shot him though?

Maybe he shot it non-fatally. I didn't listen to the whole thing.

My husband was a farmer, farming's a full-time job, and one thing I learned very quickly was that it doesn't do any good to scare away a predator; they'll be back as soon as they think you aren't looking. You have to shoot them. And I had a 20 gauge for badgers and such. Never had to shoot a dog though. :D

I've been in that situation. Most of dogs that attacked our livestock were strays that some A- hole dumped.I feel bad that the dogs were just trying to survive, but no way could we let them kill our goats and turkeys.I don't think anyone wants to shoot a dog,but sometimes there just isn't an alternative. One of the strays attacked our dogs, they were daschunds and it was a feral pit bull.

I'd like the OP to tell me how it's hypocrisy and irrational to shoot a dog that is attacking your sheep. Also, if they had to put the dog down after it was shot, how is that wrong? If it's hurt why just let it die naturally?

In Zimbabwe they have to deal with lions, did you know? And even then they're trying to go for the conservation approach by somehow scaring the lions away. But, you both mercilessly kill a pet. Is there nothing that could prevent the two from meeting? Are you so helpless and at same time so ruthlessly dumb as to actually resort to killing every single time? And yeah, Barchan, if someone can't take care of a dog then give it to someone else, or should the law now start arming people to blast human orphans' heads off when they go out of line just because of some state-provided 'home' having bad standards? If not, how's that for hypocrisy?

The dog that attacked our Saanen milk goat had it by the throat tossing it around like a rag doll. How would you stop that besides a bullet? In an area where most have livestock this dog would most likely offend again. No one will adopt a dog that's a killer.Should we have just let the other dog kill our weinee dogs and then find it a home? These weren't pets, but some poor dogs that were dumped to starve.Blame the individual that dumped them, not the people that have to deal with the mayhem. Its not a problem I will have to deal with now,I have two Catahoula Curs that will take care of any trouble making animal that comes around.

Then God said, "Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."
Our dominion over lesser creatures has been established and ordained by none other than God Himself.

Make every shot count.

The dog couldn't be helped by this point and had to be taken down. It was killing other animals. By sparing it it would endanger more animals and people.

Statistically a dog or wolf is far more dangerous than a lion.
