I'd be interested to hear what people make of that.

Nope....don't believe in reparations for past sins, especially if the sins weren't committed by present people.

I never kept any slaves, and would have been an Abolitionist in Antebellum days. I ain't paying no reparations for that!

"and to start to answer the question: What can I do to help fix racial injustice?"

simple: treat people as people, and treat demographics as demographics. demographics are meant for analysis and then policies based on correlation. any other use of them is illegitimate, and that very misapplication of the concept is the main compounding factor of the problem

if someone has difficulties in their life and it's not their fault, does that mean they deserve assistance from others? yes. does their race matter? no. does it mean they deserve assistance from me? no. that's one of the reasons why taxes and governments exist: to address issues that no one citizen in particular is to blame for

this is an example of why i believe political correctness will be one of the main foundations of the next wave of authoritarian governments. you can manipulate people into doing wildly absurd things and still make it seem like it's nothing but their moral duty, and maintain that the the guilt-mongering leader is a highly benevolent and humanitarian one

I am not responsible for any debts - social, economic, or otherwise - incurred by anyone other than myself.

People spending THIER money making "reperations" because they feel guilty does not offend me in any way. Same idea for the adult babies mentioned in another thread.

I believe reparations are still badly needed.

The first round should be done immediately, and these to Native Americans, who the government of the U.S. declared genocide on. Many of these peoples are living in abject poverty. This should be corrected NOW.

The other peoples that need help are black. The ONLY way we can remove the black ghettos and assimilate these downtrodden is to invest mountains of money into the effort, first we should begin with proper education for the children; we should start as soon as possible.

As far as reparations to individuals, I'd say that unless they were included in a major overall plan, as suggested above, they should be discouraged.

Race based reparations are honestly pretty stupid, most blacks in this country have like a quarter to a third European ancestry so does 1/3rd owe reparations to the other 2/3rds? What about all the people that claim Native American 1/16 and 1/32 native ancestry? What about all the white Americans that came to this country after abolishment of slavery? If you want to ensure a real literal race war in this country then that is probably step one. No, the issue is and always has been class struggle with so many trapped in poverty for generations now and that is what needs to be addressed not ancient grievances for dead relatives you've never known.

I agree that a millionaire who happens to be 1/16 Native American doesn't need assistance.

Have you had the opportunity yet to travel the Southwest to see what The Res' looks like? Hint: No gambling casinos in sight. People who don't know if they can scavenge enough wood to heat their hut in the winter. Say what you want Jacoby, these people need help NOW.

Please note again, my suggestions are aimed at destroying the ghettos and educating and assimilating the people, NOT IN MAKING INDIVIDUALS (with or without 100% African [etc.] blood) WEALTHY.

I think you're actually thinking along the same line, of destroying class separation, but calling it by a different name. I believe my ideas, applied properly, could do this in two to three generations.

If you have any ideas along this line I'd be very interested in hearing them.

It must be decided exactly who is entitled to reparations.

Descendants of those who were slaves on or before January 31, 1865. Does this include descendeants of white Europeans sold into slavery by the British on or before January 31, 1865? If so, then I want my fair share.

People living in "ghettos". Does this include the wealthy landlords, the illegal immigrants, the paroled inmates, the and the people of white European descent who dropped out of school and are currently gaming the system? Should any 18-year old person who stayed in school, stayed out of trouble, and graduated receive any less than any person of the same age who did none of those things?

People living at or below the poverty level. This cuts across all ethnicities. Should a homeless person with dark skin receive more than a homeless person with light skin?

Sure "Reparations" is a great idea, but only for those on the receiving end. The sticking point is, and always will be, "Who qualifies?"

The world is full of people who are looking for handouts when they should be looking for education and jobs instead.

I guess, if somebody is destitute and is entitled to reparations and gets them, that I wouldn't strenuously object.

I live in the southwest, I actually use to live in between two reservations out in the desert with one much richer/smaller than the other. You're wrong about there not being any casinos, they're all over here and not all far out on reservation land. They also do a great deal of farming, this richer tribe is very industrious and owns a lot of businesses. You are right tho that many live in appalling conditions, it was something the effected me driving across the country as I didn't know people even lived like that in this country. I don't think really money for nothing really solves the issues in these communities; the much richer tribe I lived next to had just as much issues with drug and alcohol abuse, just as many people living with diabetes(among the highest % in the world), a lot of them choose to live in the same conditions as they would with no money. I don't know what would help them while being able to stay on their sovereign tribal lands, I think they need a different way of life and their own economy which is way easier said than done obviously.

I think the black community is probably much easier to help as they would benefit more from the return of a manufacturing base and the good middle class jobs that come with it, ending the War on Drugs would have an immediate benefit so many people are being locked away in prison for victimless crimes or got caught up in this culture of poverty. One of the other biggest issues is the disintegration of the family in their communities and this is happening white communities as well to a lesser degree, how can the government fix a broken culture? I think an embrace of traditional values would probably benefit this country a lot but how can these values be instilled by government except in some unacceptable way? There are too many people that have a diametrically opposed opinions, people that wish to destroy traditional values and think they're oppressive with no regard to what fills that void and how society functions. I think education in this country should probably be much more vocational than the comprehensive ideal that we currently have, we should not be pushing so many people into college. I think the German education system is much better than ours and is one of the strengths of country but that way of education(tiered) could never be acceptable here. A guaranteed basic income is probably necessary in the long run with the reality of automation and globalism, it would be preferable and cheaper compared current bureaucratic crumbling welfare system we have now.

:D Back in the late '60s and early '70s my parents lived in the first phase of Sun City. They always used to buy their cigarettes on the closest reservation for tax savings. I've never been to any of those near large cities; my experience has been with areas further away, but just as rocky and inhospitable I'd imagine. Not much growing because of a permanent lack of enough water.

The idea is to raise the living standards of the community. Schools, hospitals, places to buy nutritious food, drug programs, vocational schools for older citizens, dams and reservoirs to provide water, etc.. No individual gets a handout. It's the structure of these communities we need to build and finance until the people are ready to take over.

I see the same solution for black America.

I realize these ideas do not match those of any political party (no one including Obama seems to care) but this is only because Corporate America has told their lackeys in Washington they're not interested; they have plenty of cheap labor already.

i get the impression that americans tend to see groups of all kinds as clear-cut. like an either-or thing. either "white" or "non-white". either "with us" or "against us". and so on. and i get the impression that the politically-correct american concept of "multiculturalism" seems to be actually about amplifying the elements that promote contrast between groups, which in turn are supposed to accept each other, but not really mingle with each other in practice. in short, the prevailing concept of multiculturalism seems to be the exact opposite of social integration

that's very foreign to me, and a very strange idea really. in my country, race is often a vague thing. there's a very significant chunk of the population that you simply can't tell what race they are. also, growing up, my notion of "white" included asians and middle-easterners, and it wasn't just me. because virtually all of them around here are middle-class or higher. racism here nowadays is largely a facet of classism (and there is a strong tendency to discriminate or disparage the poor and their subcultures. which is a complex matter, because sometimes it's actually justified. but not when it comes to public policies or when dealing with individuals face-to-face. everybody deserves the benefit of the doubt, and deserves respect accordingly)

recently there have been some affirmative-action initiatives and policies, sometimes even including social quotas. i think that's terrible. it feels to me like it's a cultural import, and it's promoting racism that had already been watered down over the last century. if someone wants to promote a cultural revival, or look for a cultural identity, sure, that's perfectly fine. want to bring back cultural elements straight from africa that you and your ancestors have had nothing to do with for generations (if ever)? that's okay, i got nothing against it, it's a normal human thing, and, in itself, it typically enriches the local culture of all demographics. but when it comes to granting and allocating limited resources, "cultural identity" of any kind shouldn't entitle anyone to any benefits. it's the very fact of being disadvantaged that does, and nothing else. those things need to be distinguished

and, imagine this: since race is such a relative thing in my country, there's no politically-correct way to determine what race any given person belongs to. so, how is it determined? simple: you decide it yourself, and no one is allowed to object to your choice, no matter how absurd it might be. and if you pick a disadvantaged demographic, it can mean financial benefits and legal privileges in certain circumstances. what could possibly go wrong with this system and this trend, right?...

just a cautionary tale

I've traced my family tree, and no one on either side ever lived south of the Mason-Dixon.

If anyone wants to give ME reparations for mistreating my Irish and Jewish ancestors, however, I'll be more than happy to accept it.
