Anyone can explain Republicans' hypocrisy towards Wikileaks?
Why, I thought until a few years ago they were 'unmurican'... but suddenly it's everyone's best friend just because Putin is on their side... what exactly is logic behind their 'patriotism' that made them think 'x' (in this case WL) is against them... until it's not... until it is again inevitably, since leaks happen everywhere. In psychology, is there something akin to integrated cognitive dissonance? Because one would definitely need to settle some things in one's mind if 'Satan' suddenly becomes 'Jesus' (in their narrative)...
I find it incredible how Assange was, until a few years ago, a boogeyman they wanted to lynch so much they went so far as to come up with a rape charge (oh, redneck Texas, we're all so afraid of your malfunctional electric chairs, if only it didn't have a sizable proportion of innocents having the greatest injustice), but suddenly, oh so suddenly, he's a saint with a halo and all - I bet Texas could make him 'govnor - and they're all totally in favour of releasing everything. Except the cult leader's tax returns (and, huh, wouldn't it be simply fair if his emails were also included? Oh, but fairness isn't part of the equation of any election... especially with those who purportedly complain themselves of an unfair political system, who knew...)
I have to say, I've never encountered greater hypocrisy than this in my life.
I think this is a "people" thing. People in general are like this. You support the stuff that supports your views and you don't support it when it conflicts with your views. It doesn't matter that it can sometimes make you a hypocrite. Can you imagine how weird it would be if we DIDN'T do this? If we 100% committed to a rule system?
Look at the Westboro Baptist Church, who are technically correct in many of their Christian views. Like most religious texts, the Christian bible has a lot of conflicting messages, so people ignore the things that don't make sense or don't seem to apply to today's world. Those Westboro Baptist people are sticking to things word for word and see what it gets them. You kind of have to use your own judgement, and it's not a perfect science.
The hypocrisy goes further than simple opposites, though... e.g. they keep repeating how big government, globalization is bad... and yet whenever it released anything before now it also ended up tackling those and corruption generally (and they're supposed to be against that too, although sure enough, not for their side...)
And if they suddenly love Assange then they suddenly love a hypothetical rapist... and yet they think an entire country is full of those who they're so hateful towards... I think it might be conscious hypocrisy, although I suppose not everyone makes all the links.
