This is what I was met with when I just visited the CNN webpage...



... It's nice to see that serious media outlets still manage to keep their priorities straight...

Totally inexcusable, there are much more newsworthy things going on involving the Kardashians.

$$$. Advertising dollars I think have more sway over front page than importance of content.

Cult of celebrity sucks

The song from about 30 years ago, "Dirty Laundry" applies even more so today as when it was first released.

still looks more varied than the Washington post web page. "breaking news, Donald Trump said something controversial" as if that doesn't happen every other day. Then followed by couple more stories on trump. And then maybe you might find something on something else.

The media are hopeless - it disturbs me that my idiot relatives honestly believe that TV news, talkback radios and the papers are only telling them the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. That people can be so naive about media agenda is sickening. Was watching a documentary recently that mentioned a meteor striking Russia in 2014 with some incredible footage - we never heard a word about it. A meteor. Striking the planet.
And yet everyone knows who celebrities are screwing. Ugh.

It all comes back to cash. "Brangelina" were probably THE celebrity couple. So it will generate great interest.

The bigger issue I have with news is how most of it is negative. It gives a badly skewed view of the World. Also the attention and notoriety criminals get. Imagine if crime was just reduced to things the public should know about, like when someone dangerous is in your area or the police want help finding someone, and otherwise you just got an every so often report on arrest figures and such. It popularises crime, gives criminals knowledge on how to be more effective criminals and makes people needlessly paranoid.

While the cult of mindless celebrity is a sad thing, and these kinds of stories are a travesty of the fourth estate, I don't think it's accurate to suggest that the press would not cover a major meteor impact.

The Chelyabinsk meteor explosion and impact in 2013 was extremely well covered by the news.

A google search or visit to a library will confirm this. The many videos of the event that were captured by dashcams and on security video were widely viewed online and features on television news and in radio and print journalism.






CNN story (0% Kardashian!), Fox "news" story, Australian Broadcasting Company story, Story in "Le Monde" (Vive la langue Francaise)

etc.

For all the many faults of contemporary journalistic enterprises, not covering major meteor impacts or other astronomical events is not really a pervasive or institutionalized problem.
