When they penned the constitution the Founding Fathers could have very easily included the words Christian or Christianity in the document. They knew what it was and they also knew about other religions. They deliberately left it out, inserting the word religion. So to assume they only meant Christianity because of their own beliefs, customs or culture could be inaccurate.
