Lady President; a satirical poem
I don't usually write poetry (I'm bad at writing poetry) but this election has been huge. Not just for Americans but for the rest of the world.
Disclaimer/disclosure: I'm not an American and I wouldn't have voted for either Clinton or Trump. I would have voted for Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate. Although this poem is critical of Hillary, I do think that Trump is a misogynist and a racist. I don't want anybody to misconstrue this as support for Trump because it absolutely isn't. I consider myself to be a socialist and a feminist.
-------
Lady President
In the name of equality, the Butcher of Benghazi
Death and destruction, the end of existence
Her feminist credentials are unprecedented!
Bleeding out, the world is a haze,
a rocket propelled grenade blows off his face.
Stock markets are soaring! We can’t keep pace
With the progress we’ve made.
Half-hearted oration to a half-filled stadium,
Subsidised by Wall Street,
“Raise your legs and stamp out injustice!” says
The technocratic elite.
“Bombs will come in pink and blue,
Gays will have masculine hairstyles too.
We can make Barbie dolls less endowed,
With the first lady president at the bow.”
Liberal broadsheets print soaring headlines
For City men and City women,
Scions of inherited wealth, the privileged few:
“Enlightened by your distance from suffering,
A vote for Hillary is a vote for nothing.
Change has come and change has gone,
Nothing more can be done.”
“Stand up against the misogynist bullies!
We will win and take their money.”
Equality, justice, truth and honesty,
These words mean nothing when you’re hungry.
Election time has come and gone,
And to our surprise, Hillary is done.
If the minorities and poor were not so feckless,
We would now have our lady president.
