Ok, I do not understand what powers the president of the US has.

So he can just sign a piece of paper and things happen? Suddenly airports can't admit passengers from Syria? Suddenly he can order a wall to be built? Suddenly not funding for groups who provide education on abortions?

These things don't have to be debated and agreed upon by a majority of representatives who have been voted in by the public?

He can just do what he wants?

I've surely not picked that up right. 8O

*note: I don't want to debate whether these signed actions are right or wrong or what they mean. I just want to understand what his powers are.

I noticed this too. I don't think his "Executive Orders" are illegal, but talk about a bull in a china shop.

I am really sickened by the implications of this Muslim country ban and I think I am going to start wearing a head scarf just to mess with people.

I'm thinking that maybe people in Congress are waiting for Trump to make a really grievous mistake---then they would really pounce down on him.

He is trying to extend the powers of the Executive Branch. Soon, I believe, Congress is going to react to this usurpation of legislative power. I am sure Congress is finding a way to offset what Trump is doing.

At least I hope so.

Here's a pretty decent explanation.

He is issuing "executive orders."

They must be legal on the face of it; otherwise, there would be more uproar.

But I am sure that Congress is seeking ways to find some loophole which could stem the powers that he is exhibiting.

And then there is always the power of public opinion and civil disobedience.

This arbitrary stuff will not be tolerated for long.

I'm quickly getting the impression that Trump has no idea what constitutes an executive order, other than believing it's an irresistible proclamation from on high.

The irony about Trump's executive orders is that people voted for him because they thought Obama signed too many of them.

What is an executive order? I'm not American, so I am not familiar with these terms.

The way the papers are reporting it, they do seem like irrefutable orders.

I think I'll probably Google it tomorrow.

The President can, under certain conditions, issue "executive orders," proclamations which have the full force of law. They can't issue them under all circumstances, though.

In the UK, no such thing can be done--but the PM usually has the support of members of his party, so he can propose legislation that almost automatically passes. This would mean that a proposal from the PM to Parliament could have virtually the force of an "executive order."

You really can "thank" Obama for this one, he really opened up what can and cannot be done via executive order.

Yes also a lot of trumps orders are to reomove obamas orders. So people like how dare he use executive orders to remove obamas illegal executive orders.

It when obama did them they were like, it's perfectly legal and fantastic that he's doing these orders.

Sadly it's too late to stop or undue the ssa gun ban as it went into effect few days before trump was president :(

Trump is doing everything congress(majority republican) has been trying to do the last 6 years but stopped by obama. They have no plans on remutheir guy anymore then the democrats did when obama started using tons and tons of illegal executive orders bypassing congress.

I think Trump is going to keep chugging along like a locomotive and there's nothing that's going to stop him from accomplishing what he wants to do.

I think ideas that he's incapable, is going to fail, will be impeached, are just people understandably trying to comfort thethemselves. Buckle your seatbelts, you're in for a bumpy four year ride at maximum velocity.

I think this is wishful thinking on your part. You're obviously a devotee of the man so I understand your dismissive tactics.

You obviously rely on assumption and jump to conclusions to come up with that assessment.

Aand I have no idea what the last 2 posts are about. Don't just insult each other. This thread is for talking about what powers the president actually has and what laws are in place to handle things that he does when others don't agree.
