This an idea I had for a story. Basically Pat Robertson wins the 1988 US Election and the religious right takes over. Any ideas for how this might play out.

Weve had Pat Robertson type candidates run (Rick Santorum, Michelle Bachman, Ben Carson), but they dont make it past the Primary season.

However if Trump gets struck by lightening while playing golf (or gets impeached, or whatever) we will have a President Pence (making your piece of political science fiction reality).

That would mean the weather and the golf club was rigged.

Pence, Carson, Santorum and Bachman are all sane and rational people to a certain level Pat Robertson is different however. He is loose canon, an extremist and shows a disregard for a human life. A dynamic character like that would be very interesting to write about in a scenario where he becomes president.

I have to question just how rational Bachman is.
Pat Robertson is an insane idiot.

LOL...I'm not sure if Pat Robertson is even around to defend himself.

I don't like religious fundamentalists of all stripes.

But what are some ways in which this person could be elected?

The Middle East has shown us over and over and over that religion and politics just don't mix. To wit, most of those countries are Muslim. You'd think that alone would make everyone live in peace and harmony. Nope. You've got Sunni killing Ba'ath, Turkic Kokandi Uzbek Muslim forces under Yaqub Beg declaring a Jihad against Chinese Muslims under T'o Ming during the Dungan revolt, Muslims vs Muslims CONTINUOUSLY.

That which further divides us only serves to keep us apart.

The religious right, in itself, would be a provision for war. This group will say their interpretation of the Bible is right; that group will say their interpretation of the Bible is right. See how the seeds of war are sown?

Man's ignorance alone is enough to cement the divisions which lead to war.

If a religious fundamentalist is elected to the Presidency, I see trouble....big trouble.

I don't WANT him elected.

Basically, if the whole nation had the demographics of Oklahoma, a Pat Robertson certainly would be elected.

I feel, if Pat Robertson got elected in 1988, that Bill Clinton, by 1992, would have seemed to be even more appealing than he actually was.

What are some ways he could get elected though. I had one that being that one of his predictions might actually come true, allowing him to be seen in a better light.

Robertson has been around a long time.

None of his predictions have come true.

I just don't see any way the man can get elected.

Unless the United States was composed of Oklahoma only.

It seems obvious that Pat Robertson appeals to you in some way.

His election as President of the United States would make a good piece of dystopian fiction.

And it is worth pointing out that in the 1988 Republican primaries he won Hawaii, Nevada, Alaska and Washington, so maybe their was a path for him towards the nomination.

Dystopian is right.....

Though I wouldn't put him in the Big Brother category LOL

The scariest aspect of his regime would be his mandating the teaching of Intelligent Design over Evolution.

Of course, the whole Pat Robertson scenario is meant to be a crossover between a small scale dystopia and Alternate History.

Anybody got ideas they would like to share for the story.
