Did George Wallace really repent his racist views?

Hey guys so recently I have begun to wonder about this. George Wallace as you all know was the governor of Alabama from 1963-1967, 1971-1979 and 1983-1987. He was involved in repressing Civil rights activists and enforcing state-wide segregation.

However after 1972 he claimed to be a changed man. However what makes me sceptical is that he then ran for governor again numerous times, and knowing him I am beginning to wonder whether he saw it as the only way to gain office in a new world.

So what do you all think was he genuine or did he just reinvent himself cause he had to?

He was paralyzed from the waist down in an attempted assassination in 1972 and later became a born-again Christian as many people did at the time, he served again as governor of Alabama in the 80s and apparently had the most black appointees in state history up until that point. He was out of office and public life before I can remember so I can't comment beyond what I have read, if he really changed I guess would have to be a question for people that actually knew him.
