People die and give up so much everyday for you to get such the comfy life you have. People spend a year at a time away from their families to mine for natural gas and oil for your power. Soliders die for 20k a year. Truly disadvantage people work to get all A's to maintain scholarships because no one can co-sign a loan. Your a man. Grow a pair. as i say to myself, dream like an anarchist could, live like a libertarian should, act like a socialist would, and vote however you see is best with the options you have. but ultimately, let your practices define you. mitigate your idealisms with the realities of the framework you live in. think from the top down but work from the bottom up. give&take locally, defend yourself AND your community, and in doing so, promote true individual freedom to the best of your ability.

food banks are interesting, because at least in my area the bank is very much a collective. yes donations are received (and special thanks to the market that donates as much as possible to the bank before donating to the dumpster) but there is also a burgeoning garden initiative with 3 very substantial gardens in town and expanding. the overwhelming majority of volunteers anywhere within the bank (they did a survey and it's currently 89%) are patrons themselves. for a long time poor people have established collectives to get by, and it doesn't necessarily have to be tied up by big government. i see so much potential in local NGO models to solve issues that people want the government to do but no one can agree on. talking in big circles is well and good but making small circles is more productive.

unfortunately, i'm some combination of insane and idyllic when it comes to my politics, hence why i rarely talk about them.

but the only tears i can taste are the tears of my ancestors. at least most of us can agree that personal freedom doesn't extend to the likes of nazism.

Rules schmules. This is an excellent debate between these two.

I've in the past been at war with a right wing libertarian, and his gun toting, southern minion, and I concur. This character has in the past defended private business practising segregation, as it's their businesses, he argues, and so can make the rules. Apparently, being open to the public, at least in his mind, has limits. He's expressed his hatred of liberals, even though he's from one of the most liberal cities in the Pacific Northwest, while absolutely being in love with red state rednecks (no, I'm not kidding!).

You are correct. Recently, there has been an influx of neo-libertarians who do not seem to possess the level of empathy or social responsibility as their founding fathers. When I think of libertarians, I still tend to think of the older ones.

Libertarians, I believe, see their brand of politics as a means to punish those they think are undeserving of what they have, and as a means of introducing political reaction under the facade of liberty (such as getting government out of people's lives, which means ending federal civil rights laws protecting unpopular racial, sexual, and religious minorities).
