I'd like to celebrate the fourth of July by playing my favorite American Patriotic song.

This song tells the truth. People come to America from all around the world.

This includes Saudi Arabia. Trump's Muslim ban doesn't apply to them ... for some reason.

It's funny that when I talk about America's crimes like all the election tampering and atrocities like the Native American genocide holocaust, I'm told that was in the past, that was then this is now, America isn't like that anymore.

But when it comes to immigration, what occured way back in the past, like the century old pictures in that video of a song that's nearly 40 years old, that's supposed to apply to current times.

This probably isn't the right forum for a 4th of July thread.

It may degenerate into an online fireworks display... :chin:

That perfectly represents modern America! China candles represent globalization. The pooping dog represents our president.

Happy 4th, everyone! A day in which we remember the beginning of the great American experiment from which are liberties are derived - including freedom of press (media), whether the least, or mightiest of us, like what said press (media) says, or not.

To be fair, American democracy was inspired by the philosophers of the Enlightenment. They, in turn, were inspired by ancient Greek Philosophers.

That being said, democracy my go back even further than the invention of writing. Many Native American tribes had democratic voting. Many modern Amazonian tribes are essentially social anarchies.

Social anarchy is the purest form of democratic equality. It is a lofty ideal at this point. Implementing it within a civilized society will be extremely difficult ... but we all can (and should) dream.

What we call "American democracy" is essentially a pseudo-democracy due to the influence of wealthy lobbyists ... but a pseudo-democracy is better than any sort of undemocratic regime.

I was specifically talking about our system of free government, but sure.
Greek and Roman historians spoke of Germanic, Celtic, and Slavic tribes being governed by a popular assembly which doubled as the tribal army, who would vote yes or no on major concerns, such as whether they would go to war, migrate, or such. But competing with this popular assembly was the rival institution of the retinue of warriors who had sworn loyalty not to the tribe, but to a specific chief. As tribal chiefs or kings, and nobles disproportionately gained wealth, they were able to grow their retinues into private armies, which carried on most warfare in place of the free men, whose importance to the tribe diminished as they were no longer needed to defend their people to the degree that their forefathers had. Eventually, tribal kings dealt with their nobles rather than with the commoners, many of whom were losing their freedom and becoming serfs.

Yeah, pure mob rule would be great.

Quit being an elitist snob.

Everyone should have a voice in the government, not just the rich and powerful. Everyone should have equal sway. That way, the state will have to make a compromise that pleases everybody.

Modern hunter-gatherer bands are essentially social anarchist societies. You may dislike those societies. I get that. I don't hate them. People in those societies have an extremely low rate of mental illness. In those societies, suicide is practically absent. People in those societies are happy.

I'm not a trained psychologist. I don't know exactly where suicidal urges come from ... but I do know that people only develop suicidal urges when they live in oppressive regimes.

And when mental illness does appear in primitive societies, those individuals are not shunned as they are in more advanced cultures, but are seen as having been touched by the gods, and are allotted positions as shamans.
