I didn’t want to get much in to politics but this India violence is affecting people I know there, bringing danger to them.

This is terrible, reading about poverty in India's always been hard for me. Usually, it would be good to know that someone like that has been brought to justice even after 15 years but the fact that their's still people fighting for him and that it has resulted in as many tragedies is just demoralizing

I know. This sort of thing happens in India all the time. I feel for you.

India is a beautiful country. People get passionate about things there. And people, these days, are frustrated because of the rich/poor disparity there...and because of religion.

Many people want to move on from that stuff...but you always have a few who can't "let it go."

One of the challenges for India seems to be the length of its history. A lot of the states in the country act more like competing countries with all kind of border rules, tariffs, etc. and it seems like corruption and nepotism run rampant. One thing I do realize about how religion in the East can go wrong - people really have a way of giving their spiritual leaders access to their heads as if they're enlightened beings. Sam Harris, in Spirituality Without Religion, did a good job of covering the breaches in good conduct, erratic behavior, and general cruelty a lot of gurus are given a pass on as supposed enlightened beings acting by a higher rule set.

I suppose the best you can do is stand back, watch, learn, hope as little violence as possible occurs in the proceedings, and hope for the best outcome for their culture going forward.

what are the laws of mere mortals in comparison to the wisdom of a holy man?
Modernisation will be cause for tremendous bloodshed, there and elsewhere.
Can't say it was peaceful here (Europe) either.

Something my India friends sent me a few hours ago:

Quote:
thank you for the support...such cultism needs to be condemned!
just in the news...that man's goons had planned to create mayhem days before the verdict, (because they expected it?) a huge convoy of cars accompanied him and it had afire engine too which was filled with 1200 litres of inflammable liquid instead of water to put the whole city on fire!! some religion and some godman this!! !!

They didn't have a reference so I went looking, yep, sure enough. Report is in a language I don't know - I'm kind of stuck with English after memories of school years Latin, Spanish, Hebrew, have been lost in the intervening 35 years.

I cannot comment on the guilt or innocents of this man but it's unfortunate when a person raises another human being to such a status that, in their eyes, the person can do no evil.

Community leaders should not be free from scrutiny.
