Apologeise for the Hyperbole. Of course most HoI players aren't alt righters but I think their is an issue to look at.

This may be helpful. So Hearts of Iron 4 is a World War 2 simulator in which you take control of any nation from 1936-1945 and try to bring your country or faction to victory. I have played 270 hours of it but still not as much as others.

This is starting to alarm me but their is a staggering amount of White Nationalists in the Hearts of Iron community. I know this from my brother's conversations. He by chance bumps into many of these groups on discord and many express some nasty sentiments, such as that different races and Jews are inferior. One person in particular actually marched alongside Richard Spencer in Charlottesville.

This is scary to know about but I guess it makes sense. I can see many people with an infatuation for WW2 Germany taking an interest in this game. But why else apart from that. Is it indicative of a wider problem in society.

A glance at the Steam discussion forum for the game reveals the usual mix of edgelords, keyboard warriors and sh!tposters you'll find on any niche multiplayer game's board. I think you're overestimating the scale and breadth of the problem. I'd be more concerned that your brother might be specifically seeking out white supremacist gaming groups.

With a peak of 20k players online globally, I don't believe HoI's audience is representative of anything but itself.

Game sounds interesting, is it multipleplayer only? I don’t like playing against others.

As a side note, players of various war games in Germany were asked what side they choose to play, Allies of Axis, and the answer almost always is Allies. That's because Germans today hate the Nazis for what they had done to their country.
