Stuff I Learned From Irish-American History
Hi all. Let's talk about this history of Irish people in the United States. A while ago, I was reading about the history of Irish-Americans and I learned some facts that might be inconvenient ... for some people.
Facts About Irish American History
- America experienced a wave of Irish immigration during the Irish Potato Famine. In other words, the Irish did not come to America because they considered America to be objectively superior to Ireland. They came because their country was in a huge mess and they, usually begrudgingly, had to leave. This is how immigration tends to work. Most people naturally love the country that they were born in, and will only move if a life-and-death struggle forces them to do so.
- When early Irish-Americans tried to vote, the Know Nothing Party tried to scare them away from the voting booths. Sound familiar?
- When Irish-Americans first arrived, they, statistically, were more prone to arrests and imprisonment than average Americans were. People thought that this would never end. Did it eventually end? You tell me.
- Irish-Americans were stereotyped as violent and were associated with street gangs. Does this remind you of anything?
- Irish-Americans were also stereotyped as lazy moochers. Noticing a pattern?
- Female Irish-Americans were stereotyped as "baby factories" that were "breeding out of control in order to displace the native population". Sound familiar?
- Some people hated the Irish because they hated the Catholic Church and believed that Irish immigration was a Catholic plot to conquer America and destroy democracy. Sound familiar?
- People also come up with pseudo-evolutionary excuses for anti-Irish discrimination. For example, many people at the time argued that Celts were genetically inferior to Anglo-Saxons. These claims sounded "sciencey" but they were never scientifically proven. Does this remind you of anything?
- Irish-Americans were compared to non-human apes. Notice a pattern?
This is what people back then actually believed.
VVV
Here's your homework for tonight: Read about Irish-American history and then tell me what you learned.
What have I learned? Immigration is, ultimately, no big deal. Things are looking bad now, but, in the end, everything will be okay. Trust me.

There was no gigantic welfare system back then.
There was no federal income tax back then.
That's the #1 complaint about immigration. That "s**thole countries" will send needy people who can get on the welfare system.
Places like California throw out welfare money for non-citizens.

This thread was not created to discuss history. It was another attempt to point out America as racist, more specifically the evil white man.
This forum, as in Wrong Plant is a support forum first and foremost. While this particular section may not be for direct support people come to discuss. It’s still the overall theme of this forum.
I never said that all white people are racist. I never said that all Americans are racist. I never said that only white people can be racist.
If you think that immigrants will never integrate into the United States, prove it.

Also SH90: "Stop posting facts about American history! That hurts my feelings!"
Trolling is either okay or it isn't. Pick one. Stop being hypocritical.

The OP is only demonstrating how 19th century Ireland had been considered a $hithole, and that Irish immigrants had been regarded the same way as Haitian immigrants are today by Trump and his fan club. The descendants of those Irish immigrants are regarded as regular, hardworking Americans today, as will the descendants of the Haitian immigrants in the future.

That's precisely what I was trying to say.
Watch the movie Gangs of New York if you haven't already. It's a very honest portrayal of Irish-American history.
The Irish who went to Barbados suffered even more ... but that's a topic for another day.

Yet, you make a thread comparing Irish, to blacks. You could have discussed the struggle the Irish had when they immigrated. Instead, you make another thread that was clearly to discuss racism. With a clear attempt to point fingers at conservatives as being racist. It's only briefly disguised as Irish-American history discussion, you quickly turn it into a race issue. A very common theme with you and few others.
I never said that, not once. I have used my own family (mom/grandma) as an example when they immigrated to this country from a true s**t hole. There was no express lane back then, they had to prove they where going to be productive and not a burden to society... We need merit base immigration.
Also SH90: "Stop posting facts about American history! That hurts my feelings!"

If you take posts in PPR GIFs, Cartoons, Jokes, Funny Pictures, Etc. serious, then you need help... But I am glad you can admit you're a troll.
Again, you only want arguments (not debates). Funny how you ignore the post from @LoveNotHate and concentrate on me.
If SH90 thinks that I only criticize America, he's wrong.
Irish people used to suffer in Britain too. Additionally, Jews used to suffer all over the West.
I just used Irish-American history as an example because most people here are Americans who are familiar with American history.

Irish immigration was pretty catastrophic for America at the time. Things have calmed down now, but the US polity was forever changed. Even in the modern era, the Irish-American Catholic (so integrated, much wow) vote was of such importance to the Clinton administration, that he encouraged forced ably assisted the British Labour government's pathetic and unnecessary surrender to the IRA. How integrated can they be if their vote depends on America's policy to a foreign land they have supposedly left behind in their ancestor's past? When you dodge the immigration bullet, you should probably try to avoid the situation next time rather than stand still, safe in the knowledge that it missed you last time.

Like German and Italian Americans, the descendants of Irish Americans have been assimilated into American society. I seriously don't know of anyone worrying about getting the Irish vote in the same way they want to get the black or Latino vote. That's because non-whites still feel - for very good reason - that they aren't afforded full rights as citizens yet, whereas Irish Americans do. Well, with the exception of some closed communities of Irish Americans, such as where that blow hard, Bill O'Reily, comes from.

You're ignoring my point that if they were properly assimilated there would be no such thing as an Irish-American identity so many generations later, there would be no Irish civil societies, no Irish for Hillary campaign. No IRA sympathisers shaping American foreign policy in the 90s. There would only be Americans. Unless of course you have a very low bar for assimilation.

Okay. I'm not going to address every point that SH90 is making, but I do want to say a few more things.
Are conservatives racist? They aren't always racist, but they can be.
The central keystone of conservative thought is nostalgia. It's right there in the word. "Conservative" comes from the verb "conserve". Nearly every conservative argument starts with the phrase "back in my day".
Thus, conservatives can often be racist. When American slavery was ending, the people who wanted to preserve the slave system were technically conservatives. During the American revolution, the Empire Loyalists were conservative by definition.
The word "liberal" comes from "liberate". I will admit that there are some a**holes who make liberalism look bad, but, at its core, liberalism is all about challenging illegitimate forms of authority.
Another Thing: The phrase "Not an argument!" was popularised by Stefan Molyneux, who agrees with conservatives on 90% of issues. He uses the phrase "Not an argument!" when he is dealing with liberals who say "That's racist!" without adequately explaining why something is racist. You can't have a debate without arguments because arguments are the building blocks of debates. I'm just using definitions here.
Another Thing: Legal immigrants with university degrees often face racial harassment. That's a fact. Additionally, the US already has a rigorous screening process regarding immigration. Additionally, many of these immigrants come from countries that are more conservative than the United States. That's why so many conservative men date foreign women and travel around the world to meet women.
I honestly don't know why some conservatives hate me so much. I've made it very clear that I'm not trying to ban Christianity, guns or white culture. I've already distanced myself from anti-white extremists like Malik Zulu Shabazz and Robert Mugabe. I'm not a threat to your way of life. I'm only a threat to illegitimate forms of authority.
