I think he was just consolidating his power rather than actually trying to liberalise the country. He wanted approval from the international community.

A further destabilized Saudi Arabia isn't good. If things kick off think about what would happen if you had a Syria-like conflict engulfing the home peninsula of Mecca and just how end-times nuts things would get.

Yes, best if they overthrew their royals, their religion, and became a liberal democracy tomorrow but being realistic it would likely take several generations to even get half way to that point.

Well, if liberating his kingdom's people and women in specific is a side-effect of him wanting to consolidate his power then that's a good side effect for the people, don't you think?

It would be better than the old regime keeping things as they are.
