Hi all.

In this thread, let's talk about some historical figures who deserve more attention. I'm making this thread because, in my opinion, too many political people are only concerned with the very recent past.

Mikhail Bakunin: Mikhail Bakunin was an atheist and social anarchist intellectual who lived in Russia during the 19th century. I'm mentioning him because anarchism has an undeserved reputation as an anti-intellectual movement nowadays. Overall, I find it odd that many people on the left never mention Bakunin despite his contributions.

Peter Kropotkin: He's another atheist social anarchist who doesn't get enough attention despite his contributions.

Murray Bookchin: Another revolutionary socialist who argued that capitalism was the main source of environmental destruction.

Lysander Spooner: An American Christian socialist who argued for the abolition of slavery. We all know that Lincoln freed the slaves, but many people forget that the political far-left was also opposed to slavery at the time. In fact, during his presidency, many people attacked Lincoln because he had ties to the far-left.

Benjamin Tucker: He was another atheist and social anarchist. He argued that unions were bad because he believed that the workers were capable of organising strikes themselves.

Amadou Bamba: He was an Islamic pacifist (yes, they do exist) who peacefully protested against the French Empire in Africa.

Tạ Thu Thâu: He was a Vietnamese communist who was murdered by Ho Chi Minh for being too liberal.

Rudolf Rocker: He was another social anarchist who wanted workers to control their workplaces. He was a major influence on Noam Chomsky.

Louis Riel: He led a Métis resistance against the Canadian government. He was one of the few people who was ever hanged by the Canadian government ... back when capital punishment was still a thing in Canada.

Vercingetorix: He led the Gaul resistance against the Roman Empire. He ultimately lost, but we can all appreciate his noble effort.

Bottom Line: Conservatives will often claim that liberals and leftists know nothing about history. To be honest, they have a point. I've given y'all a place to start. Make me proud.

Richard Feynman: An atheist scientist who advanced the field of quantum mechanics and had some participation in The Manhattan Project. He comes to mind because I think he had an idea of how far computing power could progress some day and also because we're approaching Quantum Computing.

Thomas Paine: He was one of the founding fathers of the United States. In his later years, he became a passionate atheist. As a result, hardly anyone came to his funeral.

Wat Tyler: He led the 1381 British Peasant Revolt. He is one of the greatest Englishmen in history in my humble opinion.

Zeno: He was an ancient Greek philosopher. According to Peter Kropotkin, he was one of the earliest anarchists ... though he existed before "anarchism" was a word.

Susan B. Anthony. I would love to see something above a 3rd grade level book researched and written about her.

Check out his audiobook - Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! It's ace.

Clarence Willcock: A member of the UK Liberal Party who rebelled against PC Harold Muckle's demand that he produce his Identity Card when he was stopped in his car whilst driving. His action eventually led to the Conservatives winning the 1951 general election on a policy of abolishing them under the slogan "Set the People Free!".
