NLP is really scary! The practitioners, thereof, babble that "The World is made up." A very Solipsist view of reality. I wonder if any of the rest of you have come across it, yourselves. Everything is "a distinction made up in language", to them. Nothing is real to them.

The eye/brain makes these distinctions, then they appear in language/math.

Arguably, these distinctions don't truly exist.

Physics suggests that there's no "empty space" in reality; everything is connected.

Physics suggest that actual reality is like "quantum space-time foam" ...

I'm really confused, I always thought NLP was just an inroad people used to mold or retrain their own circuits with affirmations, choice of habit, how they phrase their thoughts to themselves, etc.. What does it have to do with solipsism or believing that the world is 'made up'?

Is it not obvious?

Is what not obvious?

I think I was just trying to point out that the existence or general use of NLP and what a few flakes do with it aren't equivocal. Otherwise it's a bit like saying some people drive like idiots therefore cars are scary.

The N.L.P. types usually babble things like, "The World is made up." They add such clauses as "In language", and "in our speaking and listening." Tell an N.L.P. type that you had an unpleasant life, and they will again babble, "I know it is a story you are telling yourself. Can you change the story?"

Good and Evil, Right and Wrong, any distinction at all, "Is just a distinction, made up, in Language!"

 They are very frightening people. For, the adepts are brainwashed into thinking that they can, in their turn, brainwash others. A pyramid scheme of brainwashing, as it were. Nothing is real to them!

Not to get into semantics, but when you're using the term 'world' are you sure they're referring to the literal physical world, or not just as a placeholder for 'society'. The word can/has been used to reference both, it's obviously imprecise if they're talking society, but their point would hold more validity if it is.

So in other words the most vapid type of new agers who are looking for something to do after the Secret and Dan Brown wore off. Odds are most likely if (really when) reality comes back and smashes them pretty hard for not being whatever they told themselves it was they'll go find a corner to cry in for a while and then find some other craze to jump on.

You're talking about the kind of person who buys healing crystals and tachyon necklaces, not the kind of person who walks into a bank or shopping mall in real life with a shotgun and says 'I came to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I'm all out of bubblegum'. They're not time bombs for anyone but themselves. My saying that might not be comforting but trust me when I say there are limits to how a person can change themselves through such things (even if they're doing it in a much more grounded way) and if they're pushing themselves way out of homeostasis and getting nowhere they have to eventually have to knock it off and find something else to hyperventilate and invent grand narratives around.

From where I stand I'm actually a lot more afraid of radical postmodernists as they're all about making the realities or unrealities, that you're worried about with NLP people, political and then governmental. That's a situation that could bring us to the edge of early 90's Rawanda or Bosnia.

:D Perhaps, you are right. Tell me more about these Postmodernist Chaps. You have caught my interest!

I would but, it seems like one out of every five or six threads on PPR brings it up.

I also feel strange to be the first one to tell a person that something they haven't heard of is a thing. I might suggest browsing Youtube, Wikipedia, other threads in PPR, and checking back in afterward. There's also another well-read poster here who defends it's admonitions well, ie. like NLP it's not that the concept is awful - it's just the way a lot of pseudointellectuals apply it that gets worrying.

NLP is eerily like Postmodernism/Multiculturalism/Cultural Marxism. Except, whereas the latter speak in terms of Social Constructs, Neuro Linguistic Programmers speak in terms of everything being "made up, in language, in our speaking and our listening."

But that's not what Neuro Linguistic Programming is, at least any more than Art is canonically about jars of urine.

I can't always tell if I'm communicating really badly or just dealing with honest disagreement. If its the former let me know.

The Neuro Linguistic Programmers are very, very dangerous. It is all about manipulating others into believing they can, in turn, manipulate others. It is a brainwashing Pyramid scheme. I suspect it is closely tied to the Pick Up Artist Community. After all, there are certain parallels and overlaps. Some Neuro Linguistic Programmers are not only Pick Up Artists, but also Pick Up Artist Gurus.
