In Defense of Fantasy Fiction
Hi all.
Today I want to bring up a topic that I don't usually bring up, but needs to be brought up. I want to talk about fantasy fiction and the religious nuts who have an irrational fear of it.
Why do so many religious fundamentalists have a problem with fantasy fiction? Most fantasy fiction is based on old European folk tales. Parents told these sorts of stories to their children back in the Middle Ages and nobody had any issue with that.
My biological father is a religious nut who thinks that fantasy fiction promotes Satanism. This belief has never made sense to me. Most Satanists grow out of it when they turn eighteen. It's just a phase that emo teens go though. I don't see why some people think that Satanism is a big deal. Satanism doesn't come from fantasy fiction. It comes from adolescent hormones.
For example, a lot of religious nuts seriously believe that Magic: The Gathering promotes Satanism ... even though the demons in Magic have a tendency to devour innocent humans.

Furthermore, angels exist in MTG as protectors of humankind.

Yes ... demons frequently appear in fantasy fiction ... as villains. How is that an advertisement for Satanism?

I have never understood that madness. Pokemon, Harry Potter, Dungeons and Dragons, and lots of other innocent entertainment is said to be satanist in nature, or a gateway to occultism. Maybe their belief comes from the old testament rules? I don't recall where it said so, but there is something about not doing witchcraft etc. They wrongfully see it as trifling with the occult.
These fanatics must really love Buffy the vampire slayer who has vampires, werewolves, witches and demons as friends!
I have a hard time not laughing at them when I hear them demonstrate and do book burning. It's so ridiculous.

Well that is not entirely true about Satanism, its certainly not just an adolescent thing. I myself was mostly interested in it in my later teens and early 20's...even learned of various types. But yeah wasn't anything I stuck with, still find it rather interesting though.
That said I am not sure why some people think fantasy fiction promotes satanism, that doesn't really make sense. Maybe they are concerned one might start worshiping the mythical creatures in it like Dragons...so they're concerned of it making people worship 'false' idols.
Also whilst I haven't heard that about Magic the Gathering, which certainly is not Satanic...I have heard that people have said that about DnD, I have never played that but I would imagine its not Satanic either, but that's an even older game than Magic the Gathering so this idea that such things are Satanic, certainly does not seem to be anything new.

One part of the Old Testament says that you shall not allow a sorceress to live.
Of course, sorceresses aren't real. They were never real. Anyone who claims to be a sorceress is a liar. Magic never existed.
If magic were real, scientists would have discovered it by now. Cops would protect themselves using wards. Curses would be used in the military. Ghosts would be used as espionage agents. Werewolves and ogres would have killed off normal humans a long time ago.
Magic simply isn't real. The Devil isn't real. It's all fake.

Uhhh, my mom kind of bought into that about Pokemon so yeah that didn't really help me socially that I wasn't allowed to watch it and even thought it was bad. That certainly did not help me at school, just gave the other kids yet another thing to make fun of me for.
Interestingly enough, now I don't think my mom is even a christian at all. At some point she became interested in things like eastern religions/spirituality and medicine, yoga and meditation. Anyways some fellow christians told her those kinds of things were 'satanic' or at least that she shouldn't be interested i stuff like that because it goes against god. Well she certainly seems to care a lot more about getting in some meditation and yoga than ever going to church, these days. If she does go to church its one of those Unity type churches that are non-denominational and encourage a bit more open minded approach.

I, personally, believe that supressing a child's imagination is a horrible thing.
