The expression “getting your panties in a twist”

I am surpised in this era of uber political correctness this is an acceptable insult in all parts of the political spectrum.

Sexist overtone - It links being overly emotional with a piece of clothing worn by females.

Homophobic overtone - If directed at a guy it is linking him with female clothing and “hysterical” women. Ironically since it is often used to say a person is too political correct the expression is a politically correct way of calling the guy a fa***t.

In my experience, women say that expression more than men do, and they usually say it to women.

Perhaps this has changed, though, since the expression has become more "mainstream."

I use it or expressions like it (e.g. drawers in a wad, panties in a knot, etc) for it's belittling effect when belittlement is warranted.
