Hi all. I'm just sharing another important thought. I was going to put this in the TV and video section, but I decided to put it here instead because this could get political.

I've noticed that nearly all historical movies that come out of Hollywood are about the history of Western Civilization in some way. I think that Hollywood should make more movies about historical events that the West was not involved in.

Here Are My Reasons:

- Western history is full of brutality because most movie-worthy historical events are full of brutality. It's often hard to make films about Western history because conservatives will cry "anti-Western!" if you stick to historical accuracy. That's why nearly every film about the Christopher Columbus is full of whitewashed, ahistorical trash. We shouldn't shy away from the brutality of Western history. Perhaps the brutality of Western history will be easier to digest if we also draw attention towards non-Western brutality.
- It's easier to be an impartial judge of justice if you are examining a defendant that you don't have a strong emotional connection to. This is a central keystone of the modern legal system.
- Too many people only know about the history of their own country. You generally have to look at the bigger picture if you want to learn more about what makes us human.

For example, I think that Hollywood should make a movie about the Papua Conflict. It would be very easy for us Westerners to be impartial judges since most Westerners haven't taken a side in this conflict. Plus, it would be very easy to make an epic, action-packed story about the ongoing conflict between the Indonesians and Papuans.

What other historical events would make good films?

EDIT: I forgot to mention that this would be a great way to give non-white actors a chance to shine without sacrificing historical accuracy in the process.

Columbus "discovered" Trinidad & Tobago in 1498. The indigenous people who lived there, the Caribs and Arawaks, didn't cotton to some Europeans marching on their land with impunity; consequently, there was war. The Caribs and Arawaks were either driven out to Venezuela (7 miles away by boat), slaughtered, raped or enslaved. Some succumbed to diseases the Europeans brought with them.

I was born in the Trinidadian city of Sangre Grande (big blood), so named because of a massacre where a lot of blood was shed. A movie about this or other conflicts would be interesting to watch. It'll probably resemble Black Robe.

It would also be interesting to see a film about the historic conflicts between the Bantu and Khoisan people of Africa.

I do think these films should be made. There are a lot of films about historical events that should be made. But your question is which of these should be made by hollywood, to which my answer is: none.
Hollywood has a rather boring and repetitive visual language and a bunch of storytelling principles that often run contrary to factual events and good ways to depict things... the
I mean... The hollywood treatment doesn"t allow fir alienation and utterly disturbing things and truly nihilistic endings - yet, history more often than not dictates just tgat: alienation and nihilism.

Have a look at the japanese film "caterpillar", and compare it to the patriotic and upbeat pro-war ending of "saving private ryan".
Hollywood can't make "caterpillar", and it shouldn't try to make historical films.

It's interesting no one has tried making a movie about the Lewis & Clark expedition.

However, I think such a film would be better as a mini-series or a film trilogy given how epic the real-life journey was.

They did come out with a major motion pic about that in 2016 called "the Promise", starring Christian Bale.

And the Turkish government was in fact less than happy about it.
