On Feb. 25, Louis Farrakhan, the leader of the Nation of Islam, gave a speech in Chicago in which he repeatedly and venomously assailed the “satanic Jew.” Anti-Jewish invective from Farrakhan is nothing new; the Anti-Defamation League calls him “the leading anti-Semite in America.” He has blamed Jews for the Sept. 11 attacks, apartheid, the slave trade and Hollywood degeneracy.
What raised some eyebrows is the fact that Tamika Mallory, a co-chair of the Women’s March — the flagship of the anti-Trump resistance — attended the event and posted about it on Instagram.
This is no isolated incident. Mallory wrote an enthusiastic social media post about Farrakhan’s appearance in Detroit two years ago. And she was involved in organizing his Justice or Else rally in Washington in 2015, along with two Women’s March co-chairs, fellow New Yorkers Carmen Perez and Linda Sarsour (who has faced allegations of anti-Semitism).
The Women’s March leaders’ Farrakhan connections have been the subject of controversy. His anti-Semitic speech, replete with such observations as, “When you want something in this world, the Jew holds the door,” revived the issue.
Yet Mallory would not disavow Farrakhan. Instead, she made some self-exculpatory Twitter posts, affirming her abhorrence of anti-Semitism and anti-gay hate — which Farrakhan has preached — without ever mentioning Farrakhan or her reaction to the hateful speech she attended in person.
Many progressives (especially progressive Jews) expressed their dismay at Mallory’s stance. Yet no less dismaying was the rush of other progressives to express their support for her — among them Sarsour, fellow Women’s March co-chair Bob Bland, Black Lives Matter activist and writer Shaun King, and New York Civil Liberties Union executive director Donna Lieberman, who tweeted that she was “proud to stand with” Mallory and called her “a fearless fighter against racism.”
This cavalier attitude underscores something critics of the modern left-wing social justice movement have said for a while: Progressives who pay lip service to intersectionality — the interconnected dynamics of different kinds of oppression and bias — often turn a blind eye to anti-Semitism. In their worldview, Jews tend to be perceived as privileged, so bigotry against Jews is seen as punching up more than punching down.
Yet in Farrakhan’s case, his status as a supposed champion of the oppressed seems to mitigate other bigotries, too. His Chicago speech blamed Jews for encouraging people to become transgender. He has slammed women for being too lazy to cook for their families. Imagine the meltdown the Women’s March would have if someone from the Trump administration had made such a comment.
It’s not just the Women’s March that has a Farrakhan problem. Illinois Democratic Rep. Danny Davis has called the minister “an outstanding human being.” On Sunday, he confirmed his personal ties to Farrakhan in an interview with the conservative website The Daily Caller and remarked that, “The world is so much bigger than Farrakhan and the Jewish question.”
The Congressional Black Caucus also has refused to repudiate Farrakhan, with whom members of the caucus (including, we now know, Barack Obama) secretly met in 2005.
Progressives who denounce bigotry on the right need to start by cleaning house.

I'm actually going to agree that Louis Farrakhan is scum.
He actually believes that Malcolm X deserved to be assassinated because he "went soft".
The Nation of Islam is a far-right cult disguised as a progressive organisation.

Not sure what exactly the point of all this is. Is it suggesting progressives in general only denounce bigotry if it comes from the right? or what exactly.
In which way should progressives 'clean house'? All you can really do is not support things like anti-antisemitism, racism and bigotry and call out people who do, particularly politicians and lawmakers.
Also I'd say before the conservatives tell progressives how they need to clean house, they also have a lot of house cleaning to do. I am rather sick of hearing an alternative reality from alt righters every-time you hear of someone expressing racism and suffering a consequence like being fired. In this alternate reality they are just being persecuted for 'different' thinking, well actually white supremacy is not 'different' thinking its racism.
So maybe conservatives should do a better job at calling people out who try to excuse racism and bigotry with lame excuses like that, and take a look in the mirror and see to it they aren't making excuses for it. Also maybe if the white supremacists and neo nazis are having a march....don't march or stand with them like that Charlottesville march with the tiki torches.
All of that said this Louis Farrakhan, sounds like bigoted scum, and not very 'progressive' at all.

The only White person, and the only outsider to the Nation of Islam person of ANY skin color, whom I ever heard say anything nice about Farrakhan (at least in recent years) was a certain WP person who praised Farrakhan because Farrakhan supported Trump in the 16 election. And this particular WP person makes Rush Limbaugh look like Leon Trotsky (not exactly a "progressive" this WP person).
In my experience most Progressives mention Farrakhan in the same breath that they mention David Duke (as being two peas in the same rancid pod).
And long before 2016 I stumbled upon Farrakhan speaking on TV. Heard him say "to Hell with the Democratic Party". So the feelings between him and Progressives are kinda mutual nonaffection.
In my experience he and his organization are viewed by both conservatives and liberals as being the Black equivalent of the KKK. Nasty, but not at the moment very powerful. So there is little love, but also little worry about him ( though in literature from Jewish organizations meant for Jewish readers there has been a certain amount of alarmism about Farrakhan's antisemitism).
Uh, yeah...

Well I suggest that is a false claim, much like stating that conservatives are all racist.

Farrakhan is also pals with Tom Metzger of the White Aryan Resistance due to both having a mutual hatred for Jews.
I wonder if The Advise Show morons know this but then again, they themselves deny that Farrakhan killed off Malcolm X and deny his anti-Semitism.

Certain key members of the resistance only denounce bigotry from the right. Certain progressives as alluded to in the article view Jews as privileged so antisemitism can be tolerated. For others, it is support of "white" Israel against the"brown" Palestinians that makes antisemitism tolerable. For others, it is the enemy of my enemy is my friend. In resistance terms that means removing Trump is the goal and anything else is a distraction.
Trump saying Tiki wearing Nazis are nice people and playing to bigotry and Republicans supporting Roy Moore because he will vote for a supreme court judge and agenda they like and all the other enabling of hate they have done not make the left doing the same damm thing in order to oppose oppression, and because Trump represents an existential threat and removing him or hurting him by any and every means necessary is something every woke person needs to do, any better.
I am not pro Trump I wake up notice everything is still here and am thankful because of a 2 year old like temper tantrum of his did not vaporized us. Yes surviving as a world is more important than anything else. But between the enabling of shutting down free speech and this type of thing I truly fear a progressive wave and them coming to power.

Well I don't think most progressives think anti-antisemitism is 'tolerable'.

So you said you are not a "progressive" either, but still advocate that Trump should be resisted and removed, or even literally harmed at all costs? Did I read this all correctly?
Still sounds like crazy, even dangerous left-wing progressives to me. If anything, people who voted for Trump and not the other person shouldn't get blame for not wanting to vote for a party (and especially their more recent candidates) that is always steering further towards "progressive" militancy.
The Labour Party here in the UK is having a terrible time with the far left harassing Jewish Labour MP's. The Leader of the Labour Party supports Hamas and Hezbollah. The labour party slogan is "for the many not the few" the joke going round is "for the many not the Jew". Anti Semitism doesn't really surprise me though as they love to attack white men as privileged and Jews on average tend to be the wealthiest groups within societies.

When Farrakan is enabled and they are tolerating him and when they praise him it is worse than that. His statements are worse than politically incorrect or microagressions. And the people called out in the article are not Antifa but elected officials and a leader of the women's march. I am talking about the people being called out in the article that is why I put progressives in quotes.

I am not talking about what I advocate but I am describing the core thinking of the resistence movement. I find it frustrating because I think their thinking improves the chances of Trump bieng relected and further advances the zero sum game/winner and loser mentality.

I would say most jews are middle class to upper middle class. Most very wealthy individuals aren't jews, I think jews are just over represented among wealthy individuals. Why is this? A lot of people will point to the fact that many jews at one time were money lenders, but in my great grandparents days, this was a minority of jews. In my great grandparents days, most were trades people and not particularly wealthy. My grandfather did fairly well for himself though and I think the reason is best illustrated by a comparison to my gentile friend's grandfather as he and my grandfather came from the same era.
My friend's grandfather worked for the railroad. He made enough money to buy a house in a working class neighborhood and start a family, and earned a nice pension to retire on, but he only saved his money and didn't believe in investing because of the notion of stock market crashes. He managed but remained lower middle class as far as net worth goes.
Jewish European culture stresses education, and though my grandfather on that side came from a struggling immigrant family, he was expected to go to college, and he did. His grades were good enough that he received full tuition. He then went to graduate school, which he had to work his way through. After graduate school, he worked in his profession for a while, and saved enough money to open his own business. This was a risk but it was a calculated risk. My grandfather was very interested in finance. Her actually opened a number of businesses. Some did well and some didn't and he lost large sums of money but he earned a little more than he lost. He did take a significant financial hit when the stock market crashed again and found himself over $1 million dollars in debt. This was in the 60s so that was a very significant sum. He never recovered all of his losses but he managed to pay off the debt while rebuilding his businesses. In the end, while he was never rich, he was fairly well off.
Of course not all jews are good at finance or business or go to college. My cousin was a high school drop out who became a cable guy...but his mother really got on his case about it.
