Old but interesting now after witnessing the total collapse of Libya, the guy probably had the ambition be the top ruler of a united productive Africa.

Some of the folks commenting on that story are Africans. And some of them are expressing a little less than unmixed ardor for him in their comments.

More than one pointed out how Kaddafi only suddenly morphed into being an "African" only late in his career after he failed to be accepted as an "Arab".

And some of us have long been aware of how he wanted to "lead" (ie 'rule') more of Africa then just Libya. He only tried to conquer his neighbor to the south, Chad, once. Invaded, and it turned into a quagmire: his own Vietnam. His invading force of big imported Soviet tanks got outmaneuvered and destroyed in the middle of the Sahara by a bunch of Chadian guys with rocket launchers riding in the beds of Toyota pickup trucks.
