Hi all. Today I want to talk about another thing that has been bugging me. I want to talk about the fundamentalist Christian attitude towards sex. I bet that most other religions have a messed-up attitude towards sex, but I want to focus on Christianity for now because Christianity is the religion that I am most familiar with. If anyone here wants to criticize Islamic fundamentalism (or whatever) then feel free to do so in another thread.

Here's what every Christian fundamentalist says: "Homosexuality is a sin. Abortion is murder. Prostitution and pornography are sinful. Masturbation is a sin. Marriage should be between one man and one woman. Adultery is wrong. The Bible says so."

Does the Bible really say that? Let's look at these issues one by one and analyse them.

Homosexuality: Sure enough, the Bible does say that homosexuality is sinful. The Old Testament only forbids male homosexuality, but the New Testament also forbids lesbian sex acts.

Here's what fundamentalists have wrong. Many fundamentalists will say "Homosexuality can be cured with prayer and conversion therapy." The Bible never extends this sort of "compassion" to gay people at any point. The Bible explicitly states that people who engage in gay sex should be put to death.

Masturbation: I read the Bible and I honestly couldn't find anything that was against all masturbation. There was one guy who was killed by God because he pulled out during sex, but is that the same as masturbation? Not really. Some people have also told me that masturbation is a form of adultery, but that's really pushing it in my opinion.

Whatever. All adults masturbate. Any adult who claims "I don't masturbate." is obviously a smug liar.

Porn: The Bible doesn't discuss it, as it didn't exist in Biblical times.

Adultery: The Bible is very against adultery … in most cases. In Biblical Israel, a man was often forced to marry an unmarried woman that he had sex with. Having sex with a woman who was married to another man was punishable by death.

Abortion: I honestly don't know where the "God hates abortion." mentality comes from. The Bible never speaks out against abortion at any point. In fact, Ancient Israelite women were often forced to have abortions when they were suspected of adultery, but no hard evidence for said adultery was found.

Prostitution: Prostitution was common in ancient Israel and I couldn't find any Bible verse forbidding it. Some people consider it to be cheating, but ancient Israelites considered prostitution to be an exception to the normal adultery rules.

One man, one woman: The Bible actually makes it very clear that it is okay for man to have several wives and also several concubines.

Consent: I honestly couldn't find anything in the Bible about sexual consent. The Bible makes it clear that any man who rapes a woman who is married to another man is worthy of death, but the Bible doesn't seem to care about consent in other circumstances. For example, marital rape is never mentioned.

Other: The Bible also says that a woman is unclean when she is on her period. Any man who comes into contact with her must wash himself afterwards. The Bible also says that men with crushed testicles may not become preachers. I'm not sure why.

"So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. And God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it..." -- Genesis 1:27-28

Otherwise, the Bible generally teaches against any sexual relations except between husband and wife. The Bible specifically mentions sexual intercourse between persons of the same sex as among the forbidden acts. Homosexual acts are mentioned in seven Bible passages:

• 2 refer to rape (Genesis 19:5, Judges 19:22)
• 3 refer to intercourse between men (Leviticus 18:21-22, Leviticus 20:13, Romans 1:27)
• 1 refers to intercourse between women (Romans 1:26)
• 1 refers to prostitution and possibly pederasty (1 Corinthians 6:9-10)
• 1 is general in nature (1 Timothy 1:8-10)

Romans 1:26, 27 (NIV) says:

“God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for each other. Men committed shameful acts with other men...”

Although this scripture is alluding to homosexuality, strict Christians sometimes view oral and anal sex as “shameful” or “unnatural” even when it’s between a husband and wife. The “natural” use of sex would be the kind that could result in a baby.

Masturbation is often considered off limits for the same reasons.

I’m not saying I agree with that. I’m just trying to show their reasoning. Strict Christians try to take the fun out of everything. Experiencing and giving into lust will take your mind off of God and Jesus.

Ten Commandments? More like just one:

“Thou shalt not do anything even remotely amusing”

1 Corinthians 7:4,5 (NIV) says:

“The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent.”

These scriptures suggest that a spouse can’t say “no” if his or her partner wants it. It’s also been used to justify marital rape. Some strict Christians don’t believe marital rape is a thing since our bodies belong to our spouses.

Some strict Christians take Deuteronomy 22: 23,24 very seriously.

It says: “If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death - the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help and the man because he violated another man’s wife...”

Women have been blamed for being raped if they did not “scream” and try to fight off their attacker.

As far as polygamy goes, there’s lots of polygamy in the Old Testament, but it’s discouraged in the New Testament.

For example, 1 Timothy 3:2 says that an overseer in the church should be “the husband of one wife” (KJB).

Oh, but you can "cure" any problem you or anyone else has with your sexuality by neglecting your sexuality. After all, everyone is supposed to neglect theirs when single.

Not really. I grew up isolated enough that close to my fourteenth birthday, I had no idea that something like masturbation existed, and then I was taught step by step how it worked by my father. Even that wasn't enough—I spent a lot of time on my own playing mindlessly with my penis, trying to follow his instructions (yes, this means I didn't feel any kind of urge to do it, and wouldn't have done it if my father hadn't told me anything), without feeling anything out of the ordinary. I only found out what all the fuss was about one day, lying face down on my bed, still fully clad, thinking of a certain female classmate I liked a lot. I mean I thought of her, the way I usually saw her, so fully clad, too. I didn't imagine her in a suggestive pose or anything, since I didn't know there was such a thing. Had I been asked, I might have said I'd like to see her breasts (breasts have looked beautiful to me since my early childhood, obviously long before they could sexually arouse me), but hers didn't even seem to be fully developed yet, so I didn't pay them much attention. I didn't imagine her physically touching me, let alone making any sexual motions, as I had no idea what these looked like. What I did was rock absent-mindedly, and then began to feel the strange warmth of what became my first orgasm.

It's pretty easy to imagine an alternate timeline in which I never found out there was such thing as sexual pleasure in my whole life. My parents could simply have never mentioned sex in my presence, and sent me to a sex-segregated school. I could have lived in a more conservative society, and people could keep acting like they can't talk about sex in front of me because "there are children present" (I heard a classmate say that, referring clearly to me, but not addressing me, when we were about seventeen and someone else in the conversation mentioned something more or less sexual), even in my adulthood. Women would tend to leave me alone, like in real life, and there'd probably be many more barriers for me to enter spaces where I could meet them, so I'd basically forget they exist and live like a monk, without thinking there's anything special about it.

But this is about male masturbation. History shows women's sexuality is even easier to suppress. Many go their entire lives, even bearing children, without experiencing a single orgasm, and yet more do get an orgasm once in a while, but can't be bothered to masturbate, because it doesn't seem worth their trouble. Hostile attitudes to sex or to female sexuality help them a lot forgo sexual pleasure. So does lack of hygiene (modern standards were an inconceivable luxury for almost everyone for most of history) and being forced to marry men they don't like that much, and who may abuse them.

So there are plenty of reasons you can admit you don't masturbate—and probably be laughed at—with not exactly any smugness.

Infanticide was common, too, and few people ever batted an eyelid at it.

Women were property, so there was no such thing as their consent. Rape was a crime against their fathers' or husbands' property. Marital rape was a contradiction in terms.

I guess it took balls to preach.

As far as abortion goes, a lot of people take scriptures like Psalm 127:3 to mean that God would be against abortion even though the Bible doesn’t refer to abortion outright. It says: “Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him” (NLT).

It would be a very grave thing not to accept this gift from God to fundamentalists. They view every child as a “blessing.” Aborting a child would be subverting God’s will.

^ similarly, there are several verses which suggest that foetuses are "alive" and special, which therefore suggests they should be protected by the prohibition upon murder. For example, Elizabeth's foetus (John?) "leaps" when he hears that Mary is pregnant with Jesus, and God claims to have known us from the moment we are formed.

That said, there are many differing views within Christianity about the ethics of abortion, and the verses in question don't provide much to differentiate between them. Some use the verse about Elizabeth to suggest that abortion is fine until the foetus starts moving, for example.
