Hi all. I've made this topic out of curiosity. What do you think of the people who are trying to reclaim the swastika?

I'm asking because the swastika was a symbol long before the Nazis used it. It originally had no racist connotation. When will humanity be ready to take back this ancient symbol?

When the Nazis are forgotten, and thus humanity is doomed to repeat their history?

When I first saw it, knowing nothing about the Nazis, it reminded me of a whirlpool.

To be sure, as the swastika is virtually a universal symbol, it's anyone's guess how old it really is. After all those countless centuries, it would be a shame if fanatic, genocidal nationalists like the Nazis get to claim it at the expense of everyone else.

Buddhists and Hindus still use the swastika.
There was a show on the ashram satellite channel where a giant golden one popped out of a pink lotus.

Also in popular Japanese media they use it sometimes I think. In One Piece, the original flag for the Whitebeard Pirates had a swastika.

The Nazi swastika is unique. Other swastikas can be used if one wanted to use a swastika.

It’s a Indo-European symbol. Perhaps “Aryan.”

Hitler ruined both “Aryan” and “Swastika.”

You're right. Everyone of a left-wing disposition should immediately start wearing swastikas. Take it back!

I didn't say that.

I'm saying that people should read about the pre-Nazi use of the swastika so that the swastika loses its edge.

I'm not saying that people should start wearing the swastika before it starts to lose its edge.

There we go. Hehe. I guess I'm making a semi-serious point somewhere, I don't think it can be taken back.

Long before the Nazis came to power and appropriated everything good as their own, Baden Powell dedicated the swastika as a Boy Scout "badge of fellowship".

Here is a link to a webpage devoted to "Swastikas in Scouting".

Jerry Cowle, on May 23, 1977 wrote:
Scrub pine, aspen and khaki army tents covered the hillside that sloped down to a blue mountain lake. Midway up the hill stood a flagpole, with 100 uniformed boy scouts surrounding it. Old Glory had just been raised. Suddenly, the scouts came to attention again and extended their right arms, palms outward, in a salute. The bugler triple-tongued a call. Up the pole to a place just below the Stars and Stripes went a black flag with a white swastika.

This was in the mid-1930s, when I was 17, and most of us, in our youthful innocence, still regarded the swastika as an American Indian symbol. The emblem of the Order of the White Swastika was the equivalent of the Congressional Medal of Honor for the scouts who went to Camp Russell in Woodgate, N.Y. A scout had to be somebody special, to do something truly outstanding in the judgment of his leaders and his peers, before he was voted into the order. When a boy had proved himself, and had gone through the order's solemn initiation, he felt that he had accomplished something really worthwhile...

For the record, I'm too thick-skinned to be offended by Mikah.

I'll let the mods do what they want though. They might consider this to be a personal attack.

The following graphic displays the ubiquity of the swastika...

If they share your sense of humour and have no sense of context, they may well take action. Still the avatar stays unless they complain. Not only are we taking back the swastika, we are also taking back the little mustache.

It's not that people don't get your sense of humour, it's just that it sucks.
