The US pulled a Canada. That's why. To stipulate, here in Canada, we tend to have a low voter turnout in most elections, because we're pretty meh when it comes to political responsibility. We are certainly a no-nonsense kind of people who may swear loyalty to one party or another but generally vote practically first and foremost. However, only a percentage of people take the time to have their opinions heard, so we quite often end up with incompetent and unpopular people in charge at all levels of government, simply because the percentage that votes don't always hold opinions of the majority, but their voice wins out because they took the time to submit their ballots. I'm one of the portion of Canadians who do vote and believe in my responsibility to do so, but many Canadians couldn't be bothered.
The US on the other hand seems to take politics quite seriously and get really invested in it. They have things called political rallies, and even have debates hosted in Las Vegas. I can guarantee if Canada had a city like Las Vegas it would never host political debates. Most importantly though, it sounds like Americans generally do vote. For a variety of reasons though, the most prominent likely being that both candidates this time weren't ideal, many just decided not to vote. Donald only got about as many votes as Mitt Romney did in the prior election. But, the US pulled a Canada. Canada pulls a Canada all the time and let me tell you, it isn't always roses, but when the US screws up it's clear that it has a much larger ripple effect, so here's hoping Americans will never repeat that mistake again.
