APA guidelines warn of 'traditional masculinity,' men harmed by too much 'competitiveness'
Turn off those iconic Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger movies: researchers now say that “stoicism, competitiveness, dominance, and aggression — is, on the whole, harmful,” for boys and men.
The “first-ever” guidelines are described on APA’s website as follows:
“APA’s new Guidelines for Psychological Practice With Boys and Men strive to recognize and address these problems in boys and men while remaining sensitive to the field’s androcentric past. Thirteen years in the making, they draw on more than 40 years of research showing that traditional masculinity is psychologically harmful and that socializing boys to suppress their emotions causes damage that echoes both inwardly and outwardly.
APA’s Guidelines for Psychological Practice With Girls and Women were issued in 2007 and, like the guidelines for men and boys, aim to help practitioners assist their patients despite social forces that can harm mental health. Many researchers who study femininity also work on masculinity: Several contributors to the guidelines for girls and women have also contributed to the new guidelines for boys and men.
‘Though men benefit from patriarchy, they are also impinged upon by patriarchy,’ says Ronald F. Levant, EdD, a professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Akron and co-editor of the APA volume ‘The Psychology of Men and Masculinities.’ Levant was APA president in 2005 when the guideline-drafting process began and was instrumental in securing funding and support to get the process started.”
Clinicians are encouraged to recognize their own biases when dealing with males, the “integrated nature of masculinity,” and ways that “power, privilege, and sexism work both by conferring benefits to men and by trapping them in narrow roles.”
This is another example of typical American overcorrection. Society had and still does to some degree accepted mistreatment of women under the guise of "men will be men". If you do not accept that you live in a bubble, are in denial or are misogynist yourself. The problem thankfully is in the process of being corrected and this process by necessity is often painful.
Correcting misogyny by misandry is not the way to go. Calling this misandry is not out of bounds. If the APA looked at the stats and concluded blackness leads to being a greater chance of being a criminal or a crime victim they would be pilloried. If the APA claimed that being your natural LBGQT self is harmful because that stats said it makes you perennially depressed, prone to seduce young boys oh wait they used to claim that. The APA has chosen to ignore the reality of two wrongs not making a right.
Call me disordered but what America needs at the moment is more stoicism not less. Stoicism taken to far is no good, if you are getting chest pains and are out of breath trying to tough it out might be a fatal call. The same concept is true for all of the other "harmful" traits listed. Dominance is good to a certain extent unless you like anarchy, somebody has to lead.
The last paragraph urges members to recognize their own biases. I wish the drafters of these guidelines had done that.

But socializing boys to suppress their emotions is psychologically harmful to them. Why do you think the suicide rate is higher among men, especially young men? A lot of those boys could be helped if they were able to express their feelings and let people know they need help. All the APA is saying is let's stop telling little boys that "boys don't cry" and stuff like that because boys are human and have feelings just like girls and should feel free to express them like girls are allowed to do. No where are they claiming that masculinity is a disorder, just that they way we sometimes apply gender roles to people as a society is really unfair and restrictive--to both women and men.
I agree that those qualities are largely deleterious, with the exception of stoicism which is a virtue for both sexes and needed more than perhaps any other in these times. The idea of a patriarchy is a castle in Spain, though I understand why feminist "intellectuals" would seek to perpetuate it - it sells books.

I know one reason men have a higher rate of suicide is that are a lot more "successful" at it.

The trouble with "venting" one's feelings is that, after a while, one becomes in a sense addicted to doing so, and cannot conceive of obtaining relief for his symptoms any other way, creating a cycle of dependence which, even if others are capable of providing the relief required (in my experience, they're not) crushes him once he finds himself in a situation where a substitute mother is absent. In short, a need to share one's feelings creates, in clinical terms, a pathologically dependent personality; given that dependent personality disorder is generally regarded as being the most common of the set of a dozen or so personality disorders recognised by the DSM, it seems people are far too inclined to share their feelings with others, hence my comment above. We need to bring back stoicism and we need the bring back what in Britain we call the "stiff upper lip". Someone who has spent his life running to his mother at the first sight of danger - be she his biological mother or a substitute one - grows up unable to deal with the real world. This is the genesis of the so-called "snowflake" phenomenon, which is a huge threat to the efficacy of the next generation in the west.

Well the extreme of never expressing emotions and feeling like your not supposed to or its something to be ashamed of isn't healthy either.

I must be the sickest person on WP than. I wear German helmets because I like to show support for soldiers around the world fighting ISIS. My favourite video games have to do with war. My favourite TV shows have something to do with war. I think that if they knew me, they'd like to lock me up and throw away the key.

There are actually many causes. I've seen graphs and people speaking about studies that prove that girls are more suicidal and depressed than boys but as age increases the exact opposite presents itself and women are less depressed and suicidal while men are more depressed and suicidal.
I have heard one reason men are more suicidal these days is because of how we evolved versus how the world evolved. Men used to be the providers and the protectors, so as women have become less dependent on men and can often make more money than men, men feel more useless. Take me for example. I'm big on love yet I feel I have nothing to offer a woman because I'm disabled and have many health issues, so I am doomed to be lonely even though a 'love connection' with a woman is what i desire most. Thankfully I found this site to help keep my mind occupied.
Masculinity is a part of our evolution, it's expressed in many species. Just ask the lion.
Even in our recent years, women typically want a confident man that isn't sensitive, it seems to bore a lot of women. Women like men that take chances, evolution has led men to take chances. In today's world we have made it so difficult for men to where if he takes a chance by making a move on a women he will either be rewarded by acceptance or have sexual harassment charges filed against him which further isolates men. Fuzzy lines, I know, it can be deemed very wrong to make a move on a women these days, but at the same time women generally will not give a man a chance if he doesn't make a move. So what does this reality we are building truly offer us as a species? Complete separation?
I know I got a little deeper into it, just talking.
Can we please not start making sweeping generalizations about women and what women want. You don't want us to do it about men, so let's not do it about women either.
I'll just ignore your comments from now on.

No, you need to fix your comment because making sexist generalizations is against forum rules.
I believe I used 'typically' and 'a lot'. Obviously I'm not being sexist, you are being picky, so I just want talk to you.

I don't think so, maybe war history is your special interest but I don't think it necessarily makes you sick. I mean there is a band I like that mostly does songs about historical wars a metal band called Sabaton in case you want to listen to them, its not harsh screamy metal. and I certainly don't think they are sick for doing songs about it.

The golden mean is always best, but to say that society has too much stoicism at the moment is downright obscene - we need at least tenfold the amount of stoicism we currently have, to achieve the mean.
I do agree that we need less of the other qualities listed, however, but I don't consider them to be any reasonable definition of traditional masculinity, but rather, a factitious version of masculinity fabricated by the social scientists in Hollywood in the postwar era.
Traditional masculinity is about virtues such as integrity, courage, hard work, perseverance, love of family, love of country, providing for a family and yes - stoicism. These are all virtues that young men now are in dire need of.
