How racist is Mississippi?
opinions? i can't see them being a deal more racist than georgia, arkansas, or alabama.
i think a lot of mississippians are aware that their state seems to get the lion's share of anti-southern sentiment/ridicule. it's possible that some of them get tired of often having to dispel the stereotypes.

Sorry asking for experiences would have been a better thing to ask for. My Black sociology once talked about American states and said, its okay to go to Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia and Tennessee but not Mississippi that place will not welcome you. And his experiences only confirm that.
right...i have never been to any of those states (i'm in SoCal) and i don't immediately have a reason to change that.
you say you're in new zealand. i wonder, how much american history/culture is talked about over there in schools?

Mississippi is consistently ranked as the most corrupt state of the entire U.S., for at least the last decade (and most certainly longer), and South Dakota is right behind Mississippi for most corrupt.

I personally would love to go to Mississippi and not just there I would like to go to Detroit, Flint and Louisiana. These are fascinating places, they will teach you about a different part of America.
Do you study much American history?
@Ban-Dodger I thought Louisiana was at the top.
It depends on the Mississippian. Some are racists; others are not.
If you would go to Mississippi, I doubt it very much if you would be harmed.
The Mississippi Delta region just south of Memphis, Tennessee is notorious for being a poor area--but many people believe this was the "birthplace" of the Blues. The Blues, and jazz, are considered quintessential American musical forms.
William Faulkner, a famous writer, is from Mississippi.
Going by statistics alone, Mississippi is ranked as one of the poorer states. During the Civil Rights Era, quite a few people suffered in Mississippi and other parts of the South because of their opposition to black/white segregation.
I wouldn't categorize Mississippi as a "racist" state. Racial incidents happen there--but racial incidents happen in New York State as well. New York State is not often seen as being a "racist state.
I guess, if I was a black person, that I would be wary about entering a bar in Mississippi which displays Confederate flags. Otherwise, for the most part these days, everybody is safe in Mississippi, except for people who are victimized by crimes which happen in other states as well.

Very well said.

Say what now??? There are places in the Union that are more corrupt than Rhode Island, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts?
Wow.

I live in MS. Honestly it depends on where you go, but racism is quite prominent in almost everyone. That includes people of all backgrounds and ethnic groups as well. We have an abundant amount of corruption, as was mentioned before. Crimes often go unsolved, and that does include murders and hate crimes. I do "like" MS, but I feel like "hospitality state" is a bit much when it comes to describing Mississippi. We're barely friendly to each other down here. I'm not sure about other parts of MS, but I've been all over, and I've mostly run into unfriendly people. Everyone is different, but there is a "vibe" that you get from people around here, and it's quite unsettling. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend moving here or visiting to anyone, but that's just me. ![]()

I just like being cute and small.
That's interesting. Have you seen any racism with your own eyes?

Yes, of course. Again, not everyone here is racist, but I see it all the time. I get it, some stereotypes are hard to ignore, but it's like everyone is racist against each other. One incident would be families disowning children because of an interracial relationship, which has occurred in numerous families, far more than anyone would like to believe. Racial slang is used in almost every other sentence in more "redneck" towns. I am also witness to this.
We have many people who won't hire if someone is of an opposing race. There's been many cases where people who have jobs are treated unfairly because of their race, and are often over stressed and eventually fired, in most cases.
Children in local schools are often time filled with racial hate against each other, which leads to bullying. That, too, I also have seen.

I hope people like yourself are the future of Mississippi.

I hope you do get to come to the US sometime.
Flint, Michigan is about 150 km or so from Detroit, Michigan One of the main problems with Flint is that the General Motors plant there closed, there were mass layoffs, and many of the people laid off lived in Flint. Unemployed people get depressed, and don't maintain their homes and neighborhoods. But if you happen to come to Flint, all this wouldn't affect you, as a tourist. There are a couple of "attractions" there--but tourists aren't exactly flocking to this place.
You'll find out that the US, in general, really not what it seems to be based upon media portrayals. You'll find that you'll absolutely need a car in most parts of the US, so don't rely on public transportation unless you're in a very large, preferably "older" city. "Newer" cities tend to be more car-driven. You have idiots in the US--but most people just want to be left alone to raise their families, and they don't mind tourists, usually.
I heard New Zealand is a nice, pretty place.
I'm really of the opinion that people should "get out" more, and stop relying on the Internet so much when they are trying to assess people and places.
