More fake news truth sodomy:

Quote:
Netflix is accused of 'eco-tragedy porn' in new Attenborough documentary featuring walruses falling to their deaths 'because of climate change' after zoologist claims they were being CHASED by polar bears

n the recent Our Planet episode of the Frozen Worlds series, Attenborough says that all the walruses know is that they need to join the others and find food.

But a leading zoologist has accused filmmakers of using 'tragedy porn' and 'emotional manipulation' to gain viewers. Susan Crockford, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada, claims the animals were more likely to have been driven over the cliffs after being chased by polar bears.

She cited a famous incident in 2017 near where the Netflix series was filmed, where 20 polar bears chased walruses over to top of cliffs at Kozhevnikova Cape, Ryrkaypiy, in eastern Russia, according to the Siberian Times.

Describing the footage as 'contrived nonsense', Dr Crockford told the Telegraph: 'This powerful story is fiction and emotional manipulation at its worst.

'The walruses shown in this Netflix film were almost certainly driven over the cliff by polar bears during a well-publicised incident in 2017, not because they were confused by a combination of shrinking ice cover and their own poor eyesight. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... hange.html

yeah, the eco-activists are not doing a great job at simplifying the complexities of ecology, inevitably creating a narrative that doesn't stick to facts in all aspects.

same as climate deniers.

after reading and watching actual climate scientists, I can see that. I can also see that the eco-activists are fundamentally on the factual side, while making stuff up to convey a message. I don't think that's an awfully good idea, but dang, this stuff is complex.

Sometimes things need to be simplified to reach a wider audience, I don't think blatantly false info should be spread, but using language to try to make people more aware of a far reaching issue doesn't seem like a horrible offense. I doubt David Attenborough has any malicious intentions and I certainly never held him to having all the facts on everything going on. So if he made an error on what he said about the walruses, to me that does not erase years of his work in documenting wildlife. Perhaps he did make an error there...that said I didn't really see much indication it was polar bears chasing the walruses off the cliff having just watched that episode that is mentioned in the OP. LIke they didn't look panicked as if they were being chased, certainly looked like they climbed up extra high due to lack of room on the breeding grounds...but not being able to see so well toppled to their deaths when they tried joining the other walruses in the water..and it showed them climbing up the cliffs to get out of the more crowded spot. Also he didn't just say 'climate change is the cause' he mentioned specifically shrinking ice habitats. Also though even if it was polar bears chasing them how does that deny the climate factor? Polar bears habitat is shrinking so if they are chasing walruses off cliffs than that would still be an example of an animal effected by climate change going after different prey than their usual. Polar bears generally eat seals not walruses.

You're managing to pack in some of the worst traits of the far left into that sentence. Using old as a pejorative, hoping old people die off, not caring about the great work someone did in the past because they did something in contravention of the culture war.

I grew up on nature documentaries and so Attenborough was a huge part of that. Years ago I was gradually turned off by them though because production values changed. In the past there was a beautiful purity to it. Researchers would go out for months and film without interference and then we'd see the best of their results, but that would also include what I guess today would be considered "boring." Footage where nothing is really happening I guess they would see it as, but it doesn't need to be! It's beautiful in itself and relaxing to watch while the narrator pours knowledge into your head.

Now, interference does happen. Nature is engineered to produce "good TV." It's all about animals fighting each other or bringing down prey or whatever, on screen action instead of beauty and knowledge. The purity and beauty is gone.

So, I don't know much about what Attenborough is doing today, but is he really to blame as the narrator? I don't know, if he's not pulling the strings, if his 92 year old body isn't out in the field witnessing it first hand like he used to and he's simply being given the footage and told a false context to narrate, he isn't to blame.

Don't do the things I said in my post. Really, if you just remove "old fart... Please fall off the perch, mate..." Doesn't that do the job? You have the OP and the rest of that post. You've expressed why you're against him.

As for me, the thing that comes to mind easiest for me wanting to show contempt is calling Anita Sarkeesian Anita Snakeesian. I always call her Anita Snakeesian if I can. But I don't just call her that because it's so close to her name, it's because it's a very apt description. If I was limited to one word to describe her, "snake" would be a very good choice for her. If she showed up on this forum though, I suppose I'd have to stop doing it because it would break the forum rules. In general I apply that attack the idea not the person rule in life, but you might catch me saying someone is an idiot or something. With Anita, I'm attacking her behaviour by saying she is a snake, but if she showed up on the forum, I'd have to stop calling her "Snakeesian" as it would break that rule.

You could also just come out and say it. I did here:

This sounds like a good solution, but the same people who created this amusing situation will tell you that transwomen are women and to exclude them from the women's sports is hateful and discriminatory. Current gender ideology does not allow this kind of restriction to be placed on male/female bathrooms, there's no chance the same people will allow it in sporting world, where fame, glory and money are up for grabs.

I can only hope they are staunchly opposed from all sides. Sport is about competition against your peers. This would violate the spirit of that utterly. I would have nothing but the strongest, most profound contempt for the transwomen who would cause this violation for their own selfishness. It would be one of the most egregious examples of the few being put before the many imaginable. The very idea fills me with disgust. If it was me I just couldn't do it (I'm not trans, just hypothetically) the shame I would feel would be truly overwhelming.

Aspirationally though, you can aim higher than me. The type of response that gets the most respect out me is when someone politely, with dignity and class, expertly tears apart an idea or behaviour. You must have seen it done before. I can't remember the gist of it now, but I remember a forum mod doing it to another forum mod once when they abused their power and it was brilliant. It was just a completely, thoroughly irrefutable dressing down of that behaviour, showing their contempt for it, while at the same time still treating that fellow mod with great respect. The issue was solved with that one post, but I would not have been able to produce that post myself.

I am showing utter contempt towards a truth sodomiser...
How would you do it?

I did here:

trans events could be organised in the same vein. If Paralympic sport can manage to exist in a financially viable way, trans sport should have no problem existing too.

It was my choice and I stand by it...
It was cathartic...
And it is none of your business how I live my life...

If you wish to be the pillar of virtue...
The quintessence moral virtue of the universe, that is your emotional engorgement of choice...
But respectfully... please don't attempt to teach your grandfather how to suck eggs...

This is a discussion forum, not a circlejerk. But not only that, you act as if my opinion was not solicited after you just asked me what I would do.

Oh no, I guess I'm being the pillar of virtue again!

You initially indicated disapproval of my post...
I didn't ask for a proletariat evaluation of my position...
I didn't ask to be judged...

You asked me what I would do, so I told you. It's that simple. Now you're acting as if I did something wrong by doing what you asked. I did not. All you're telling me by being so defensive and jumping on your pedestal to talk down to me is that I struck a chord somewhere.

Repeat:
You initially indicated disapproval of my post...
I didn't ask for a proletariat evaluation of my position...
I didn't ask to be judged...

Do you enjoy being judged?

Why is this so hard for you to understand?

I don't know why you think you're being judged. I spoke about what I'd do because you asked me what I'd do. I didn't say anything about you. As for proletariat evaluation, I'm not clear on what that means. Why you chose that word.

And you keep saying what you didn't ask for, but not what you did.

And yes, I agree. I'm not going to hound you for being unmoved by my words or anything. I'm just puzzled by the reaction.
