Olly: They have the highest rate and absolute numbers of at least some higher education in US history, though I'm reading Gen Zers rates are even higher. I don't know your age, so I don't know if you are a Millennial, but there's also the fact that both generations are the best informed in terms of news of any generations in US history. Alot/most of them are online alot/most of the time and they get their news in real time and in Gen Z's case, they've only ever known the internet world. This is why I asked on another thread sometime in the last week, does anyone under 40 still get their news from the likes of CNN, Fox News, etc any more? Those are primarily for old people and maybe middle-aged, I don't really know.
In terms of the debt issue, that isn't really their fault at all. It's the f****d up US education system (including higher ed) that now wants to sell young adults into a life of debt bondage for a degree they generally still need to get alot of the best paying, highest security jobs (such that there are any any more). And they need that b/c they inherited this f****d up, precarious, hyper-competitive labor market, they didn't choose it, it was thrust on them by the boomers and to some extent Gen Xers, particularly by the wealthy. I don't buy into this crap from people that blame the young for inheriting an economy and political system that they were born into or grew up in, that's ageist and to a large extent classist as well.
There's more to it, but the fact of the matter is Millennials and Gen Zers are better educated than any preceding generation. Hopefully they take power sooner than later, b/c the future of the country and the planet kind of depends on it.
“Best educated” == “Better And morning educational opportunities than previous generations.”
It does NOT mean, however, that they are any wiser or more experienced. It only means that there is more knowledge available to 20-somethings than there was for previous generations at the same age.
If you can’t understand that, then don’t worry about it.

My guess is that “educated” = “woke”, and their “education” is mostly MTV and news sites such as ThinkProgress and Occupy Democrats, which have been described as “far-left” by the Media Bias Fact Check,

ThinkProgress and OccupyDemocrats may have a corporate-backed centrist DNC bias, but they are NOT far left. Americans just call anything even vaguely left of center "far left". Also, being a centrist doesn't make someone more objective, not when their platform consists of people paid billions of dollars to prop up the status quo.

Exactly. It's called an arms-race. The more people have degrees, the less valuable those degrees become. The idea that all these degrees are a bunch of underwater basket-weaving classes is just-world-fallacy BS made up by arrogant self-congratulating pricks trying to cover their ass. There are more STEM educated people than ever as well, and not all have high paying jobs. Not even STEM degrees are as valuable as they used to be.

I'm not clear what exactly you mean by "The idea that all these degrees are a bunch of underwater basket-weaving classes is just-world-fallacy BS made up by arrogant self-congratulating pricks trying to cover their ass." What do you mean?
Yes, there are more stem degrees than ever before and yes alot of them don't have high paying jobs, sure. But it's not simply an issue of supply and demand. There's a caste system in higher ed w/the Ivies, Stanford, Cal Tech, MIT and a few others at the top and down it goes from there. If you go to one of those schools and do well, you're pretty much set, as set as you can be anyway. To argue that it's just a racket is fallacious. If you wanna argue that there are plenty of high-paying jobs you can get w/o going to school, ok fine, sure that's true. But in certain fields you still have to get the degree, it's worth the cost b/c there's no other way to break into the field or build the network that you get from a top tier or close to that school. The nature of the labor market upon graduation is more a function of 2 things: the insane levels of inequality in wealth in this f****d up country and the fact that those at the top and Wall Street shape the labor market, here and in much of the rest of the world, all for their own profits. Universities have become de facto profit centers that's true. But the argument that some of you are making that 1) going into debt is falling for some kind shell game or whatever doesn't fit w/the reality of the labor market Millennials and Gen Zers are facing. They have no choice. 2) As I've said and some of you still fail to grasp, they are better educated in formal terms than every generation preceding them, that's just a fact. Go look at the numbers if you don't believe me. Furthermore, they are better informed out of necessity for all sorts of reasons. This old fart argument that they're all wasting time on Twitter, Tinder or whatever is a myth b/c those generations don't know b/c they're out of the loop and are more likely to be financially secure anyway. You can believe what you want, but those are the facts.

Sounds like they're stuck in an education arms race. Even if they all become more educated, that won't make them all top performers who get jobs.
To me it looks like 8 men in the hundred metre sprint, trying to run so fast all 8 of them get first place. Ain't gonna happen.
Then again, if in the future all non-technical, non-artistic jobs get automated, if everyone becomes some sort of technician, then perhaps they need to be the best educated generation.
