AOC to back Bernie Sanders for president at Queens rally this weekend

Quote:
Lefty Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will endorse Sen. Bernie Sanders for president at a rally in Queens on Saturday, his campaign said.

Other members of Ocasio-Cortez’s progressive “squad” Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan are also expected to back Sanders.

“I have had the opportunity to work with Bernie Sanders up close on major policy initiatives,” Omar said in a press release late Tuesday. “I have seen the values that motivate him—and his commitment to building a movement that represents marginalized communities across this country.”

A source told CNN that Tlaib would join her fellow congresswomen in endorsing Sanders.

I have a feeling that will not be a net benefit for Sanders.

In the short term, I don't think it will harm him, and it might peel away a few Warren supporters or secure the support of people who are wavering between the two.

I do think that Warren will benefit more from it than Sanders though. She's trying to present herself as the less radical option, and Sanders being endorsed by the most radical senators might help her win liberal and moderate voters. Most of the candidates left to drop out are liberals or moderates. The people who have supported Booker and Beto (and ultimately Harris and Buttigieg) have chosen them ahead of Biden for a reason. If Warren can lap up a decent share of them then it will strengthen her against Sanders and potentially help her outlast him.

I read just today that there is a gay black businessman, a Democrat, in Minneapolis that is going to run against Omar next year and try to win a primary against her. It's possible that she'll be gone after the one short term. Part of his platform is publicly renouncing all forms of discrimination including antisemitism.

Ilhan Omar is not antisemitic. The statements she made, which were focused on campaign donations and lobbying by AIPAC on behalf of the right-wing Israeli govenrment, were taken out of context to smear her.
